Why Less Is More When It Comes to Teen Exercise

The World Health Organization recommends 60 minutes of moderate to intense workouts for teens each day. However, a new study from England’s Oxford University challenges that thought on the basis of the adage, “less is more.” Oxford researchers found 20 minutes of strenuous exercise is more effective for children and teens. “You do need to get hot and sweaty - you do need to get breathless.” said Dr. Alex Jones, the study’s lead author. Inside Edition Digital’s Stephanie Officer explains.

There’s a difference between doing the minimum and doing more.

60 minutes sure is better than 20, but the problem for most people (not just kids) is motivation and sustainability.
Once you make it a routine, you can keep increasing the time and intensity to not only be healthy but also in shape.

With so much teen obesity in the US, getting them to exercise at all is a victory. Too much gaming and not enough sports.

When it comes to working out, working out every other day actually gives better results, so I believe this.

Seeing how many people in this country need to get in shape, I'd say 20 is fine. The difference in effect between 20 and 0 is WAY more than the difference between 20 and 60.

Why less is better than more.

If you do less exercise and do that everyday, you will stay committed to it and it becomes a daily habit to you.

If you do too much as a beginner, you’ll lose interest and I know this because I did 2 hours of walking everyday at 21. So I would not recommend that at all.

So remember, do small then big. I learned it from atomic habits. It’s worth a read

Get your kids involved in as many sports as possible. I played soccer, football, lacrosse, basketball, and did track from elementary school to high school. It improved my metabolism, helped develop social and teamwork skills, and continues to keep me in shape to this day. I don’t exercise basically anymore, and I still maintain my muscle tone and healthy weight from those days. Exercising as a child and through development improves overall health and it sticks as you age.

Less isn't more when it comes to exercise. This body positivity movement is teaching kids, teens, and adults that it's ok to be overweight and unhealthy.

It's because of those transgender people saying "Exercising is fatphobic" and people feel bad and they don't workout because they don't want to be fatphobic.
