Inkscape Clipping and Masking | Inkscape

Clipping and Masking are important tools in Inkscape’s arsenal, giving you the ability to create some exceptional artwork. Clipping and masking are very similar – both allow you to hide part of an object, path, group or image, but you can also vary an objects transparency when using masks.

In this tutorial, I show you how to use both features and demonstrate how you can create realistic shading, highlights, and reflections to take your artwork and graphic designs to the next level.

In this tutorial, I’m using the latest version of Inkscape – Inkscape 1.1

Since making this video, I have discovered a much better way to soften a clipped edge. Instead of putting the clipped object on it's own layer and blurring the layer, you can group the object (on it's own) then blur the group. This allows you to place it or group it just like any other object 👍

I'm so glad I clicked on this video! I've been using inkscape for a couple of years and I haven't been able to create complicated designs. This really helps!

You're the only one who explained WHY you duplicate the object before you click Object-Clip-Set. TY!

After watching various YouTube videos on how to clip objects, I finally learned how to properly do it with your video.🙌

So clear and concise! Thank you for such a helpful video. I especially appreciate that you contextualized masking in this way. I have watched other videos that showed how to do masking, but only in an abstract way, and I really couldn't understand when or why you would ever use it. But now I get it, thanks to you.

I have drawn a circle and I have an image. I want to cut out of the circle. How would I do that? Would that be a reverse clip?

How do you edit an object once it is clipped inside another object after deselecting it?
