When it comes to ranking in Google, you need to understand who you’ll be up against before you target a keyword. Otherwise, you could be entering a battle you won’t be able to win.

From an SEO perspective, competitors are pages and websites that rank at the top of Google for your target keywords. So that means your competitors can be different for every single keyword you target.

So there are 3 main things you’ll want to consider before you decide to pick a fight. And those are:

► Search intent
► Metrics of the top ranking pages and websites
► Topical authority of the top ranking websites

About your example on intent from the serp for "best car seats for small cars". I think we should also look into why the more general "best car seats" are ranking. If they all include a paragraph specific to car seats for small cars, would you rather create a blog post on "best car seats for small cars" or a generic one with the specific paragraph?

This of course presuming that you match the competitors authority, links and other factors

How would you define a "similar ballpark range" and "same range" when looking at webpages with domain ratings close to my website?

Also, what would be a range that's defined as a "few" backlinks, a healthy amount versus a lot of them and shouldn't the topical authority for "best golf grips" be golf grips instead of golf since golf grips is in the keyword like the car seats example? Or is topical authority for a keyword based on the very broad seed keywords in the niche the keyword is in?

Can you clarify this? When I check on Google analytics, my site getting 300-350 organic traffic daily. But nearly 300 from bing & Yahoo. I only get 35-50 from Google daily. Those posts are written 3 -5 years ago, but I update some post, not all. Please explain, Why is my site not getting traffic from Google?
