DIY Fix For a Blocked Drain or Gully Outside

Roger has a quick and straightforward fix for a blocked drain or gully, usually just outside your kitchen.

______________________

Kitchen drains or gullies often get blocked due to the accumulation of substances commonly washed down the sink. Here are some of the common reasons for blockages:

Food Particles:
Tiny food particles, especially those that are fibrous or starchy, can stick to the pipes and eventually cause a blockage.

Grease and Oil:
Grease, fats, and oils solidify inside the pipes over time, creating a sticky surface that can trap other debris and gradually build up to a blockage.

Soap Scum:
Soap residues can combine with minerals in water to form a hard residue (soap scum) that can clog pipes.

Foreign Objects:
Sometimes, objects that shouldn't be in the drain (like utensils, small toys, etc.) can accidentally fall in and cause a blockage.

If you don't fancy Roger's method of unblocking a kitchen drain, you can try several methods:

Boiling Water:
Pouring boiling water down the drain can sometimes dissolve or loosen a grease blockage.

Plunger:
A plunger can be used to create pressure that dislodges the blockage.

Baking Soda and Vinegar:
Pour half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of vinegar down the drain. Cover the drain and let the mixture sit for an hour, then flush with hot water.

Plumbing Snake or Auger:
A plumbing snake can physically remove blockages that are deeper in the pipe.

Chemical Cleaners:
Commercial drain cleaners can dissolve blockages, but they should be used cautiously as they can be harsh on pipes and the environment.

Professional Help:
If the blockage is severe or you cannot clear it, it's best to call a professional plumber.

It's also essential to prevent future blockages by being mindful of what goes down the drain, avoiding pouring grease or oil down the sink, and regularly cleaning the drain with baking soda and vinegar.

I usually put down some soda crystals and some boiling water if the gulley is from a dishwasher or sink, helps clean out any fat. Love the mop idea.

Lovely sunny Saturday afternoon…and then a back yard of putrid stinking drain water. Rushed to Screwfix to get a fancy gadget as back up but tried this bag(and old t-shirt for bulk) gaffer taped on £2 Poundland mop first and worked a treat, so many thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I’ve got a 50 odd year old wooden stick with a circular rubber plunger on the end that my dad passed on to me. It cost me nothing, yet has unblocked many a crapper after the wife has unloaded. Cheers pops.

There are 2 types of people in this world, those who would tackle jobs like this and those who simply won't.

Just tried this myself. Worked like a treat. Had to improvise as didn't have a mop.

Tied an old t-shirt in the handle end of a broom. Tied a bag round it and boom.
Job done.

Thank you for the pro advice Mr. Plumber man.
