Swipesy Cakewalk - Scott Joplin & Arthur Marshall

My performance of the Scott-Joplin collaboration with Athur Marshall.

The mood of the piece is generally quite light-hearted; the occasional clouds are soon followed by more sunshine and the piece ends with a jubilant mood.

I 'sauce-up' the final section a little bit; other recordings I made of this piece had a lot more of that in the other sections, but I decided that all that fussing didn't really improve the sound - in fact it wasn't really all that noticeable. The last section though, I thought could use a litte in the way of adornment. :-)

I generally don't listen to other people's performances of a piece before I upload my own, but I often look afterwards, & I found that my performance of this pieces is rather slower than the others I looked at. While I found the faster versions pleasant enough, to me playing ragtime like that makes the pieces all sound pretty much alike & such performances generally fail to hold my interest for more than about a minute.

Greeted the new day with this lightweight, finesse Joplin's music ... a beautiful whole. Thank you!!

Chopin/Ragtime is cropping up everywhere for me. ...."Joe Lamb....developed...the most haunting chromatic harmonies and exquisitely Chopinesque morbidezza in all ragtime literature...."Blesh. My teacher approved of the way I played Chopin's Prelude, Op. 28 No. 7 (The short one). I played it right before Joplin's Solace awhile ago. Wow! I'm getting good! Thanks, teacher!

I'm glad you liked the performance and the photos (my new camera has given me some very nice images); Joplin's music is very refined, almost like Chopin in a way. :-)

Rudi Blesh? I think I may have read that same book ('They All Played Ragtime') a number of years back. I recall him mentioning Joseph Lamb; I don't think I have any of his sheet music in my collection, but a quick check at the Petrucci Library showed 9 entries, so I might have some soon. (Ethiopia Rag sounds interesting....)

Glad to hear you & your teacher are getting along well. ;-) :-)

I'm going to get that one little hard measure perfect tomorrow.

I'm guessing the part where it goes to a low 'G' in the left hand. Just keep at it! (Sometimes it really is better to practice slowly too, though I often find myself impatient to enjoy the music & forget this good advice.)

I meant thanks to Glen, the teacher. Who never said he was a teacher, Who teaches without knowing that he does.
