Have your breast pump ready before baby comes even if you plan to EBF. Breastfeeding didn’t go as planned for me since baby wasn’t latching. I still had my pump in the box when i got home from the hospital and had to scramble to wash everything and figure out how to put it together!

🍼Familiarize yourself with your pump, read the instructions, learn how to put it together and wash + sanitize all the washable parts. Have it ready to use just in case!

⚠️Important tip: get measured or measure yourself to find your correct flange size. All pumps come with a standard size of 24mm. If you’re a smaller or bigger size and use the incorrect one it can cause nipple damage and low milk output

🥥Use a pumping spray or coconut oil to make pumping more pleasant and reduce friction. Pumping can be a bit uncomfortable in the beginning but should never be painful

🛍Buy spare membranes and duck valves: the parts that help the pump create suction can wear out specially if you’re pumping often. Replace every 1-2 months to make sure your pump is working properly

🍼At the very beginning it might be difficult to get any milk out at all with a pump. This is because colostrum (your first milk) is very thick. Learn how to hand express or ask a nurse to teach you. You can hand express in a cup or syringe to feed baby. They only need very little in those first days

Reminder: If getting baby back to the breast is your goal or you have pumping concerns consult with a lactation consultant preferably outside of the hospital to help you with any breastfeeding difficulties

Advising people to get familiar with a pump BEFORE they have their baby is probably the best advice to give any expectant mother.
Not only learn how to use that pump but look into how your body produces milk and what will be more practical for you in the long run.
My sister and I didn’t have this kind of information with our first babies so when it came to getting back to work it was almost impossible to build a milk supply seeing as after a month or two your supply regulates to what your baby needs. Pumping from day one along with breast feeding will trick your body into thinking it needs more milk than it would with just one baby and you’ll increase your supply and be able to build a good stash for when or if you need someone to look after your baby for whatever reason.
Very good advice.
Obviously be aware of the potential of blocked milk ducts and mastitis etc as producing too much can increase these issues.
