Coach Erik Paulson going over many hand trapping drills. Wing Chun is a close quarters system of fighting.
-
Always protect your center, whether in attack or defense.
Use the opponent's strength to turn it against him.
Use the principles of deflection of force for defense and the straight line for attack.
When the bridge has been established, stay glued to the opponent's forearms (the "sticky hands" principle, Chi Sao) because information passes more quickly through physical contact than through the eye.
If the opposing force is too great, give in and use your movement system to restructure.
If the opponent retreats, follow him and keep up the pressure, do not let him make new strategies.

I am not specifically a fan of Wing Chun, but love to see coach Paulson making it work. It’s like his mind goes into overdrive and shows you all types of different solutions to a specific problem. Great to see and a truly skilled individual making it work, no matter if it’s called Wing Chun, JKD, Silat, Wrestling or BJJ.

Nice Sifu Paulson I really like these love to see more... Love the grappling and MMA stuff but also good to see the JKD and the Kali aspects of total fight conditioning. Really good material... I'm digging it

I love Jkd trapping. It's like playing with toys. Have never seen more than one work in real life. But still very cool.

I wish there was someone local to me who had this kind of wing chun knowledge and can actually fight. I learned the first two forms and the dummy form from a local mcdojo but stopped because I realized that in the context of combat sports, self defense, etc just knowing forms is even less useful than body builder type muscles. At least a body builder could potentially bear hug someone unconscious, throw them or overpower them in some other way and a person who only studies the wing chun forms(no real world application/sparring/stress testing) is just going to be overconfident in their abilities when facing an actual fighter. I switched to Muay Thai/Muay Chaiya/Muay Thai Sangha(Kru Solana's combination of Muay Thai, Chaiya, judo and jiu-jitsu) about a year ago and I feel like I learned more real world practical skills that I could use almost immediately in the first month of Muay Thai than I did in about 6 months of Wing Chun at a mcdojo. Still the little application I learned has been useful in Muay Thai sparring and especially the trapping concepts because few of the people I train with even think about it and even fewer have drilled good defenses against it. Hopefully when I go early next year to Thailand to train with Kru Solana I can get him to teach me practical wing chun since he is also a black belt/sash under Sifu Francis Fong

LOVE that a seasoned fighter and instructor like Paulsen sees the value of learning and learning Wing Chun. Far too many bozos these days are close minded and miss how terrific WC can be!

I LOVE the C--clamp it is the ONLY way to catch a high speed fist after it has missed you or makes it super easy to catch a fist that has missed your center.

Trapping is very subtle. You don’t notice, until it’s to late.

I LOVE how you slap the skin instead of over penetrating punch for the viewers sake. It lets them HEAR what their eyes cant see.

This is what I was hoping Paulson was going to do with his CSW trapping to grappling. Taking over what Sifu Hartsell was doing while he was alive. It’s his choice he went more the mma route. But not going to lie this brought some tears to my eyes cause Paulson was the one guy I hoped would incorporate the trapping to grappling to a new level. Really cool to see him doing so Jun fan and Wing Chun trapping. He’s still very good at HIA wish he do a whole series of dvds on trapping to grappling and bring JKD to the forefront again. God bless happy training

That don't work against internal. And definitely don't work against good boxing. Speally if someone twice your body weight. The Chinese made that external stuff up purly to make money. But hay what ever works
