Mike’s 30-song collection, “Covers, Vol. 2”:
Please share and help spread the music:

Liner Notes:

I consider this song to be hallowed ground. As a piece of music, it’s beautiful, haunting, and even uplifting somehow. As an expression of grief, it’s devastating. I approach this song with sincere reverence for the very real pain felt by very real people. I didn’t know little Conor, but as a father, I know the innocence and purity of a little boy his age and how precious those little souls are when they’re with you in your home, in your life. [If you don’t know what inspired the lyrics, Google it at your own risk, and prepare yourself to cry your eyes out, and prepare your heart to feel the pain of a deeply wounded artist.]

When I perform this work, I try to wall off some of my own emotions and not think too hard on the song’s meaning and origin, lest I break down mid-song. I can’t imagine how hard it is for Eric Clapton to perform this. After everything we went through with our own little Noah, I feel a type of kinship with the pain and fear expressed in this song, but I don’t pretend to fathom even a glimpse of the heartbreak and loss that brought Mr. Clapton to write this modern masterpiece. I hope my rendition will remind you of how you felt the first time you heard this song, knowing what it was about. And maybe help you feel connected to your own kids and/or family—every moment you have with them. For me, these quiet moments of extreme empathy for another’s loss make me feel more connected to those around me, family and strangers alike. They make me feel more human. They make me want to be a better human. What more could we want from art? What more could art want from us?

Love,
Mike

Mike looks intently at the chords he's playing at the start of the song and thinks to himself, Clapton really outdid himself on this arrangement so id better do it justice. I think that Mike not only did it justice but smashed it out of the ball park. All the comments say this is the best cover and if you look at his other youtube clips all comments say the same. What a talented man you are Mike

My father passed away when I was 11 years old - cancer. He was a huge Clapton fan and I grew up listening to this song. At his funeral the priest performed this song.

Your message was spot on Mike. Thank you.

Hey Mike. Quite a few of your fans say things like “best cover” or “only Clapton could do it better”. I say, you took this song and made it your own, and did the BEST rendition of the song I have ever heard. Did you write the song? No, we all know that. But Dolly Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You”, and I doubt if anyone would dispute the fact that Whitney Houston’s iteration of that song was far superior to Dolly’s original recording. You rock dude!

Mike, thank you for this beautiful rendition. Like many others, this song makes me tear up. And when I read your letter, I just couldn't help it. I'm a dad to two boys myself. This song is an everlasting reminder to love and appreciate every one in your life.

It’s one of those songs that seeps through your ear down into your skin and soaks your bones in sadness. A masterpiece that has been beautifully covered, Mike. Cheers.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven
Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please
Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Mike, you do this song so well, it blows my mind. I've played guitar for 40 years. It took me a month to learn this song. I'm finally ready to record it. Even your recording is excellent. I can't even get close to your sound... People buy all kinds of expensive vocal mics, and you seem to be using a standard stage mic, and it sounds awesome. Just amazing! I have your song in my DAW as a reference track for MY attempt of Tears in Heaven. Good job, brother!
