If this is based off of Norse mythology event then the creature is the Fenris wolf(?). It looks more like the Jörmmungandr though.

Yep, Took a class at my school last year in mythology. Jormungandr and Fenrir were 2 of 3 of Loki's children, I believe we're supposed to destroy the Norse gods but Fenrir was tied up (he eventually got loose). Jormungandr was supposed to be able to wrap around the earth and reach its tail (classic symbol of eternity)
