They've been around a while now, and with the vegan and vegetarian industries booming like never before, we investigate what's exactly in a meat-free burger. It looks the same and some would say it tastes just as good, so how is that possible?

Did he just 'yikes' GMO's?

GMO's? Aren't all fruit and vegetables technically GMO's? I mean, through the act of cultivation alone, since the dawn of farming, farmers have modified the genetics of plants to produce sweeter fruits and tastier vegetables. For example, the banana.
"All widely cultivated bananas today descend from the two wild bananas Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. While the original wild bananas contained large seeds, diploid or polyploid cultivars (some being hybrids) with tiny seeds are preferred for human raw fruit consumption."

"Yikes" about GMOs? How do you think seedless watermelon or grapes came about?

Why did you say yikes at GMOs? Nothing inherently wrong with GMOs at all, pretty much everything we eat is a GMO due to tens of thousands of years of artificial selection and domestication done by every civilization since the dawn of agriculture. Just because we have a new modern technology for it doesn't make it suddenly scary.

The "bleeding" part of a burger or steak isn't actually blood though. It's what happens when a slow-twitch muscle's certain protein is exposed to air, it turns red.

I had an impossible burger at a restaurant in Stockholm (tried my vegetarian gfs). In its credit, it tasted and felt sufficiently like a real burger that I was impressed, not spot on but easily 80% of the way there. The problem is is that the real burger it tasted like was a regular Tesco multipack out the freezer, and not something I’d be looking to pay £10 for in a restaurant or £5 for 2 in the shops

Does the impact involve rainforest deforestation? The use of coconut oil and palm oil is a huge impact on rainforests.

A buddy of mine did a test with me. He gave me 1 of each (a meat burger and an impossible burger). He asked which was which. I got it right. I’ll give the impossible burger credit. It was very close to the real thing. And had I not had the real thing I might not have noticed. But there was something off in the taste for me.

I've tried the beyond burger and it was remarkably similar to beef. There was a slight difference in flavour and texture but it was much closer to the real deal than I expected. I'd happily have it again.

I've had the impossible whopper and it was close enough to actual meat that I wondered if they actually gave me the right one. as for the GMO aspect, I don't really care as other the "oh that's has GMO's, those are bad for you" there is no evidence whatsoever that they are any different health wise to the regular stuff.

If you are a heavy meat eater, you will notice immediately that it's not meat. But I'll definitely eat it for environmental reasons

They're okay and pretty close but highly processed. But a lot of the flavor comes from the stuff you put on a burger, so I buy them when they're about the same price as beef. At some point we need to move to this anyway just to feed all the humans. Animals just take to many resources for what you get from them.

It tasted grainy when I tried it vs an actual burger
