The thought of what Ivan felt when he realised he didn't have a parachute is actually physically nauseating. Poor chap

"Spectacular geezer" is the nickname I'd give myself if I thought it would stick.

Colin’s sister continuing to record while trying to help him reminds me of the story of a soldier during the Pearl Harbor attack who kept trying to climb somewhere and couldn’t manage it until someone told him to drop the pack of cigarettes he was holding. In his panic he’d forgotten he had them, so he kept trying to climb with one hand clenched around the cigarette. (I don’t remember exactly what he was doing, only this detail)

I went to the same university as Colin. I remember the school sent out a school wide email notifying students and staff of his death. All they could note was he died in Yellowstone, but never detailed what exactly happened to him. Not to speak ill of the dead, but there are signs and rules in those parks for a reason. A terrible way to go for Colin, regardless, but let it be a lesson to everyone to please follow the rules in parks. More often than not, the rules are written in blood

The second story made me so anxious, the last 60 seconds of his life must have been insane. Imagine the amount of adrenaline and fear and shock going through him in that moment

"Oh my God No! NononooooOO---" Yeah I can imagine why the audio was purposefully cut out of public footage. You were going to hear several minutes of a man's regretful death wailing. It would probably give you nightmares.

Forgetting your parachute, I’m sure the worst part of what was going through his head was that it was so avoidable

Around 85' & being 7, there was someone throwing rocks at a buffalo laying down to take a picture.. He got smashed/trampled. Your never too young to appreciate a good lesson on instant karma.

10:00 I guess this is why it's important to do feats like this without distractions. He probably forgot his parachute because he was too focused on readying the camera

it doesn't surprise me that the sister kept videoing her brother. you really forget what you're doing in situations like that. I was filming a friend of mine while we were out urban exploring, and due to low visibility and recklessness on our part, he fell through a hole down to the next floor. I remember the shock and fear I felt when I ran up, but I was holding my flashlight in the same hand as the camera, and I was looking through the camera still because my brain sort of jumbled that I could look beyond it, it was like the camera was my eyes. so I kept filming while I yelled for him and asked if he was ok, and only realized I was still filming when I turned away to find a way down to him, breaking the spell of the moment that the camera was essentially my vision. it's creepy and disconcerting, but your brain really just kind of freezes up and you don't realize you're still filming.
my friend was fine btw, only got the wind knocked out of him and scraped his knees really badly, and we laugh about it now but we're very careful exploring these days! you learn lessons from pain.
it's awful to think that the people in this video didn't get to learn and only got to take that pain to their graves :(

My parents told me the story of Ivan McGuire when I was a kid (my dad worked at Nortel with him but didn't know him well)
Very sad story and scared the shit out me when I was younger. It's scary how one off-day can really change/end your life. Hope everyone out there stays safe!

Its mind boggling how you could jump out of a plane forgetting the parachute.

i wonder if the second case felt like a dream, where you're falling and falling, and panicking and panicking, but the closer to the ground you get the more you realize that it has to be a dream - and then generally right around impact you awaken. i wonder if he awoke somewhere different.

i mean obviously not, but. if you believe in an afterlife, then perhaps. interesting to think about all the same.

You'd think you'd make sure you had your parachute before jumping, but when you said he didn't have one, I audibly gasped. Can you imagine the sink in his chest once he realised that? Just knowing you're gonna die, and, if that was me, I know I'd feel very stupid for forgetting something so important. I can't imagine how he felt in his last moments...

I'd already learned about that sky diving incident from Qxir, and given watching that video had me feeling a very visceral kind of anxiety and dread, the moment I realized I was about to hear the story again I immediately went on edge in a similar way. I audibly said "Oh no.." out loud.

5:14 In her defense, in moments of adrenal stress, most people forget what is in their hands. Happens to people holding guns a lot. It wouldn't surprise me that it could happen with a camera phone.
