Just a tip:

If you play Expert or Master, always get Cactus Armor as the first thing you do.

It reflects so much damage back and can help you kill a few pesky enemies.

Every mage guide I see forgets the cursed flames book, it has amazingly high dps and pierce, low Mana cost and it's especially good in closed spaces and against queen slime, the destroyer and plantera, it's viable all the way to golem

The only reason I’m watching this is

Because he’s calm
His voice is soothing
He doesn’t talk too fast
He doesn’t get overhyped
His steps are simple

And I subscribed

This made me realize how severely underpowered and uneducated I am about this game. And he barely went into any detail. Thanks for the vid my man

Some revisions for pre-hardmode (for new players)

1.) Once you get 200 max hp, Eye of Cthulhu has a low chance to spawn every night if you haven't beaten it already. If you're playing a softcore character (which I highly recommend for new players), keep yourself at 180 max HP or below until you feel ready for a boss.

Q: "Won't that make surviving the jungle harder while I farm the jungle armor set?"
A: Yes, but there's ways around that. As another bonus, once you get used to playing with 180 hp and you've saved up a bunch of heart crystals (the things that increase your max HP), the skills that kept you alive with 180 hp will make you all that much better when you've got 400 health to work with. Basically, instead of gradually getting more health and using that to make up for your mistakes, limiting yourself to 180 hp will help you identify your mistakes so you can get rid of them. Trust me, doing crazy stuff like this to test your own skill is gonna save you when you hit hardmode and realize the game gets a LOT harder VERY, VERY QUICKLY after the wall of flesh dies.

Q: "What should I do with extra heart crystals then?"
A: Using either lead or iron (whichever you find), go to your base and make an anvil. While standing next to that anvil, make chain, and with that and a heart crystal you can make a heart lantern which regenerates health when you're around it.

2.) When exploring the jungle, idgaf what class you're playing as, bring a yoyo and some white string, you'll thank yourself later.

Both are easy to craft- the yoyo needs wood and cobwebs, the white string needs cobwebs and a loom to craft them at. Because both are so easy to make, you can make tons of them as a way to reroll stats- keep making white string until you have a warding one, though if you don't want to make a whole bunch of yoyos then I won't blame you. The utility you want is just being able to attack around corners without the thing you're attacking being able to hit you back.

Pro tip: If you have a lot of cobwebs, some dye, and not a lot of accessories (for some reason), you can craft a bunch of white string and then dye some of the white string to EQUIP multiple of them at once.

Q: "Do they stack and give me super-duper-ultra yoyo range?!?!?"
A: Sadly, no, but this DOES let you easily carry 5 equipment items that all have warding (warding means +4 defense PER ITEM, so that's +20 defense from just a whole bunch of string on expert mode). That said, you need 4 different colors of dye to pull this off (you don't need a 5th dye, since white string itself requires no dye to make)

(Edit) To clarify, I am NOT saying a yoyo should be your only weapon in the jungle, I'm saying you should be ready to swap to it anytime it's needed (so keep it in your hotbar). If your enemy can already see you anyway, swap to whatever your primary weapon is and burn that mfkr down.

3.) ALWAYS have a bulk supply of wood and torches in your inventory so you can wall yourself into a safe position and craft a campfire, a workbench, and a chair.

Sitting in a chair regenerates health faster, and so too does standing close to a campfire. Anytime you're low health, just find a wall to dig a hole into, block off the entrance with wood, craft a workbench so you can make a chair, put down the chair and a campfire and sit down to regen health. You can either leave this temporary base there in case you need it later or pick up your supplies so you don't have to recraft them all the time- the choice is yours.

Q: "Should I carry a heart lantern with me as well?"
A: I find it to be a bit much since it takes up a whole inventory slot, but in theory that would be the safest idea.

4.) (Can't believe Zuzucorn didn't mention this after saying the demolitionist was important) USE EXPLOSIVES TO GET OBSIDIAN EARLY.

Drain water onto lava to make obsidian, use bombs to blow up the obsidian, use the obsidian to make an obsidian skull. At 3:10, y'know how Zuzucorn says to be careful since meteorite can burn you? That's only true if you do NOT have an obsidian skull equipped. If you DO have one, they don't burn you at all. Obsidian's also another easy resource to get, so (just like with white string) it won't take you much effort to make a whole bunch of them until you get one with warding (or some other stat boost you like).

This is a really good tutorial for people wanting to try the mage class. I normally play melee but am doing a mage expert playtrough and this really helped :)

Another great weapon to get post mechs is the genie lamp (2 forbidden shards souls of night and a genie lamp at a 2.5% drop rate from desert spirits)

Thank you so much! After a couple hours of attempts (yes I know I'm not the best at terraria), I managed to beat the game for the first time, and I wouldn't have been able to do it without you!

I just became a mage today. I love using missile and ranged weapons so it's a win win. I'll miss my defense though.

I got terraria 10 days ago and decided to go mage and found this guide. I started off on master mode as my first play through and consulted this video Everytime I made progress ( I would pause the video before something gets spoiled for me) and it’s been there for me for my entire mage journey. Now 10 days later after first getting terraria this mage guide helped me beat my first terraria world and on master mode at that. Thanks

Things you might have missed out:

1. 1:31, ever since 1.4 the wand of sparking is really really good

2. 1.50, Amethyst and topas jem staffs aren't worth crafting if you have a wand of sparking due to them consuming much more mana and not having a debuff with the projectiles being slow enough to make it outright dangerous to use them against flying enemies at low mana

3. 1:58, The best way to do this is to make a long platform above the ground as it is easier to traverse and collect the fallen stars on

4. 2:09, In 1.4.1 you can change corruption items to crimson and also the band of starpower is very useful to use with a band of regeneration for a band of mana regeneration which can be used to craft the magic cuffs and is also an amazing acessory by itself, you cen even use it up to mechs it's that good, but outside of master mode (because of the extra acc slot) there will be acessories that beat it after mechs such as the celestial emblem (magic cuffs is still good till moon lord tho)

5. 4:22, A mana regeneration potion Is a good alternative to using mana potions so you can avoid the mana sickness debuff and a mana flower will be less nesscessary making space for an extra acessory (recipe: Bottled water, Moonglow, Daybloom, Fallen star at a placed bottle or alchemy table; I recommend buying 50 of any planter boxes for *each* flower and placing them to make a farm using the respective plant seeds, Dayblooms can only be farmed at night and moonglow only at night, breaking the flowers using a staff of regrowth is recommended)

6. 6:01, There is an exceptionally good weapon called the cursed flames that you can get in the same way as the golden shower but using cursed flames instead of ichor, it's the best mage weapon you can get up until frost moon but it may be hard to aim due to it shooting at an ark

7. 7:23 a viable alternative is to find a blessed apple from hallowed enemies at a low chance and any double jump item with an arena around 1400 platforms long to fight queen slime for the gelatinous pillion mount, it's a very food alternative to wings and frees up many acessory slot but this does require a boss fight which some might not like even with the easy blessed apple strategy of just running away

8. 7:52, A risky but rewarding strategy is to use the diamond robe instead of the ore chestpiece due to the amazing mana increase and useage reduction, I recommend obtaining the frozen turtle shell from ice tortoises to compensate for the lack of defence

9. Star in a bottle is a great arena item that increases mana regen and should have been noted as it is easy to craft and helps if you are avoiding thr mana sickness debuff

10. Reforging acessories to arcane will help you deal dammage for longer periods of time, making it better than menacing and lucky, 400 mana is the max ammount of mana you can have and the crystal ball gives you 20 mana so it's best if you stay at 380 mana with no buffs in hardmode

Overall tho decent video, even if it misses out on key parts of a good mage loadout, it will get you through the game
