Children reading YA books try to discuss politics, this is my personal nightmare.
I love to watch book reviews, long discussions and sometimes interesting tags. Unfortunately, they are dying out in favor of TBR, book hauls and lifestyle blogs.

Politics is invading EVERYTHING. Booktube, sports, video games and so on. It's soo annoying I stopped watching YouTube cause everyone was bringing up politics. Booktube was a big one and stopped watching anyone involved for a LONG time. Honestly I'm not gonna listen to some random stranger about politics. I'm gonna go do my own research and no not with CNN, Fox News and MSNBC.

I just thought about starting a booktube as a hobby to just talk about books I love and your video confirmed it for me- I’m not getting Twitter. No drama so I can just enjoy it.

They are not activists, they just put hashtags on twitter... lol. Perfect.

I am so glad you haven't canned this channel. It is concerning to see the politics destroying what should be a positive community and individuals. Keep being a warrior :)

I am so glad you made this video. I'm 19 and have a very very minuscule channel. I love historic fiction and I made a couple of videos on those - not ya - and I had to delete them because of the hate I got. It's so sad that we can't rave about books we love! I've finally decided that I will read what I want and make that content for myself. I don't care about the numbers, it's something for me.

I always enjoy your brutally honest discussions. I am happy with my small corner of BookTube. I found a great community here, but I know what you mean about some of the channels. My mental health improved greatly when I deleted my Twitter account. I hope you never leave BookTube. :)

Really enjoyed this discussion...I've had a mixed bag with Booktube, going on 3 years now, and I've almost quit a couple of times myself. Joining Booktwitter was definitely a mistake, which is why I will be deleting my account at the end of the year. Twitter in general just isn't for me, but I had no idea all of the crap that goes on in this community there and it's too much. I was definitely happiest when I first started my channel even though my videos were terrible quality and I had no idea what I was doing. I was just excited to talk about books, a feeling that has been hard to recapture as of late. It seems that I'm a bit too eclectic to really fit nicely in a group like you mentioned. I'm on the younger side, but I don't read what other booktubers my age do and most of the creators I watch are 10+ years older than me. I read from all genres, I don't talk about "hyped" books, I'm a slower reader, I don't have an aesthetic, I don't wear makeup (sounds ridiculous, but it does make a difference). These are all things I've accepted as hindering my growth and I don't want to change, but I'd be lying if I said it hasn't gotten me down. Still, I've met some really nice people on here and part of me keeps going for them. I intend to continue my channel, at least for 2021, and we'll see how I feel after that ~Laura

Heyoooo shots fired! Booktube can be extremely stressful to find your place in. Book Twitter is even more so because of the retweets and subtweets and the spiderweb of networks that can put something so stupid on blast and one uproar causes another and straight to the shitter it goes.
I plan on sticking around, though videos will be slow going here and there. Something may come of it, we'll see.

A very welcome perspective! I’ve been wanting to start a booktube channel but was worried that I don’t fit the “mold”. I’m much older than most and I read what I like, not what other people think I should read. But I have noticed that BookTube can be quite a clique.

I think my issue isn't even that people have politics in their work, it's that they can't channel it into anything creative and any messages in their work are shallow and pretentious. And following that, the way that this work is then discussed or argued about online.

Comparing works by people like Ursula Le Guin (someone who covered gender and racial topics numerous times in her work) to current people writing scifi and fantasy YA, this difference between artists who have something to say through the creative medium of storytelling and merely people who have something they want to say and novels seem like a good way to make their points becomes clear. Especially when you see how these authors and their supporters conduct themselves online, very defensive over their usually mediocre work.

In short, it's like comparing Banksy to some guy spray painting a political hashtag on a wall.

I really enjoyed this video. When a YouTube star reviewed my channel he told me: 1) You must do videos that no one else is doing (aka things no one cares about) or 2) find a booktuber and copy them and hope you get lucky. I decided to fire my coach because if I am not making videos that I am passionate about and enjoy and unique and add value, what am I doing? Every single book I talk about I read and spend hours making content about books that literally no one else is talking about. Then, I get 3 views. It is very discouraging. I do put some of my own thoughts into the videos because I don't want to just talk about books and neglect my life experiences and help the world become a better place. That being said 3 views and very discouraged. LOL. Thanks again for this video!

Yes! everything you said is true 100%. I'm sometimes scared to say my negative opinions on books because people can't accept different opinions than theirs. As for Twitter, I never used it and never will. That place is full of scary people that get offended over a book.

I’ve been on BookTube at the beginning of last year and I’m struggling to grow my channel. A lot of road blocks being an African woman on this space. A lot of latent pressure. I don’t want to leave but I’m definitely reconsidering my relationship with BookTube

Dude, yes.

I enjoy reading and talking about books I’ve enjoyed but I do think I made a mistake early in making my channel mainly about books which is why I now branched off to do other things. I had to hit the reset button and it’s been much better as of late. I’m in the process of planning out a schedule for next year and it’s more focused on a range of things I enjoy.

The entire idea for my channel was to work on my camera skills as well as my audio skills and to keep a video journal of things I like. Books just took over at some point but I decided quickly to shy away from it because while I do enjoy reading, I’m not about that stress of “finishing” a book just to put out a review.

I agree with everything you said here. On booktube, good luck if you dislike a book that a click of people seem to think is untouchable for whatever reason. You mentioned one in particular and it hit the nail on the head.

This video is 🔥🔥🔥, some branches of the music community were like this. I can’t speak for them now, because I left them. But that artist advice needs to be shouted from the rooftops.

Hey thank you for this. I have my few select people I watch that I love. It’s because they talk about a variety of books, and are different types of people. The point you made about politics! Yes. It’s so annoying. Like a prime example is when people kept saying what they were going to do w their Harry Potter books.

i tend to watch those of my same sex and age by default i dont know why i just do, but honestly the moment a book tuber makes it VERY clear they are woke i walk away, if you tell me a book is good because blm or lgbtq or w.e i dont want to read it anymore i want the book to be relatable and what's amazing about books is authors can NOT tell you a lot of info like skin color and other shit and that way you can relate or just say dark or light hair or eyes then you can just make it relate to you so i really hate when they hone in on something that's supper political atm because its un relatable sometimes and gross i dont care i want to read to get away same as games i want to not think of what's happening and that's being made very hard honestly
