Thanks, glad you liked it. We eat a lot of canned vegetables, but the kind that comes in glass jars. They taste good, have no preservatives and they also have a great shelf life. Canned meats, that we dont eat nearly as much, but I try to rotate as much as we can.

I find that as you said canned food doesn't get rotated as much as the dry goods. My family and I prefer frozen or fresh greens and aren't going to want canned green beans when we have frozen, for example. I don't study the canned food too much as long as the can isn't beat up. If it dented then it should be consumed before it expires. Otherwise it can sit there. Incidentally THANK YOU for the informative book. You highlighted many things I had not considered as a new prepper.

If the vacuum seal is present (you hear the vacuum on opening), it smells ok, and does not look bad (discolored, foaming, etc.), done not taste off, etc. Then it should be "safe" to eat.

didn't think you could get hold of a can of this stuff....
In Tesco, you can buy a can of spam (pork and ham) 340g for £1.50 and it's on offer !

I had some Red Feather canned butter that was about 4 years old. It was two years past the "best by" date when I decided to open it and try some. The can was in perfect shape but the butter tasted very bad. It smelled alright but I could not eat even one bite of it.

What is in the can makes a big diffenence.

Ahh I remember fried spam sandwiches as a kid with pickles and mustard. Gets a nice crispy coat frying. I just picked up a chopped spam packet in a plastic pouch. Seems a good deal for packing. Though I would say powdered milk is a very under rated item for packing but it does have some good value.

Of course its not exactly healthy food, but I've been told that starving to death is very bad for your health as well. :-)

I have had bulging happen to regular topped cans of pineapples imported from Thailand, so be careful where you get your food from. Food from Asia is not the quality as American food is and is prone to substandard ingredients and processing.

Strange, never had that happen to any of my cans. Maybe watch out for high temps where you store them?

Good point. The food inside can come from anywhere, but the actual canning has to be done properly.
