Antibiotics are a group of drugs that are used to combat bacterial infections in various conditions. They could also be used in pregnancy. When it comes to regency, all the expectant mothers are worried whether they can use certain antibiotic in pregnancy or not. These group of drugs comes in various categories staring from A, B , C and X. So each drug in o particular category is either safe or unsafe. Category A and B drugs are mostly safe in pregnancy and can be used without any problem. But C and D drugs are having a little deleterious effects on the fetus compared to the other A and B drugs and it had to be very carefully used when it comes to pregnancy. Only then the potential benefits the drugs oppose to the growing fetus and the mother. Category X drugs are definitely dangerous to the fetus and they have to be avoided as they are teratogenic in the terms of causing abnormalities in the development of various organs. Coming to antibiotics in early pregnancy, the week number 8 – 10 or 7 – 11 is mostly the stage of organogenesis where all the organs are developing in a beautiful way in the fetus. So all the drugs which are in this period can have effect on the growing fetus to various degrees. So we try and avoid any drugs as much as possible, but if it is inevitable, like infections or any condition which si posing threat to the mother’s health, it is advised to use drugs in the safe categories, that is the A, B and sometimes C category drugs. Antibiotics do not affect the fetal growth, especially in the early pregnancy. It can be harmful to the organogenesis to the development of the fetus. So growth parameters are not affected in the early pregnancy , But there are a group of drugs that can cause teratogenic effects , that is abnormal effects on the fetus, that is warfarin, phenytoin, lithium, isotretinoin etc. So these drugs are to be avoided in pregnancy as far as possible. There are many antibiotics which can be used safely in pregnancy like penicillins, erythromycins, cephalosporins, metronidazole, clindamycin and various other drugs. But of course only after your gynecologist says okay with these drugs.
