Good tip about increasing your pedalling cadence to go faster, Lance Armstrong swore by also did drugs. Drugs will make you go faster too.

serious number 4 (but not as important as the three in the video): actively lift your leg on the up stroke, so you don't have to push your other lag up while paddling. It's another muscle so it will also result in less fatigue.

This simple video was so good! I started cycling for exercise last week, and I have been doing at least two of these 3 things wrong.

4. Clean your bike, I can just see the crusts of dirt on your casette. It also destroys your equipment and that replacing isn't free

Cadence is the key. A proper cadence leads to a rolling momentum that is much more physiologically efficient, kind of like a car in overdrive. And a proper cadence feeds into maintaining momentum when gradients change as they often do. It seems counter intuitive but it's easy physics: a body in motion tends to stay in motion and increased motion resists slowing.

A well oiled chain also helps 10 fold it reduces the amount of friction you have to work against and a hell of a lot of aero

One last thing is if you put the palm of your foot on the pedal instead of your heal or middle of your foot. It makes your calf muscle get involved. More leg power equals the higher gear you and run or more torque.

Yeh, great advice.
I would add.
Clean and oil that rusty, dry or dirty chain. And lube and adjust cables and brakes to reduce friction losses.

Great point about the leg angle when extended. I rent bikes almost every week so I should keep an eye on this.

Fantastic video! Short, to the point, and free of carbon fiber.

Very well put, I didn't expect this to be real simple but practical. It shift my attention to areas I tend to neglect. Even though heavily modified my hybrid to go much faster.

I volunteer to assist at large group rides in the NYC area. Most of these rides are in the 20-mile range. Many of the participants have never cycled that far before. The main issue with their bikes and the way they ride them is their saddle height which often causes them to dismount at every little hill. I've found that nothing we (me and the other volunteers and the organizers) say makes a difference in all but a few cases because these casual cyclists like being able to put both their feet down without dismounting from the saddle. Crank-forward bikes and recumbents allow feet to be put down without dismounting, but standard diamond-frame bikes just aren't designed to work that way, as you point out in your video.
