Can it really be so difficult?

Hear what someone going through it all really thinks.

Good luck with the test tomorrow.
At 4:57 - those eyes, those eyes. Oh, puppy.
At 5:54 - thank you for the church doors. You didn't forget. Thank you, Jacob. You made my day a happy one.

I am a native German speaker and I learned English at school a long time ago (1980 - 1991), but I never really practised speaking English! Now I am learning English with videos like yours - thank you for that! Take your chance and speak as much German as possible with native speakers like your girlfriend!
Good luck for your test!

At least German has the same alphabet as English. Learning Russian in school was tough :D Or imagine Japanese... just reading/identifying the letters is a challenge, before you can even understand it.

Tolles Video! Am besten gefällt mir, wie du bündig und direkt zu Punkt kommst. Ich bin auch begeistert von wie viele Unterstützers du hast beim Deutsch lernen. Genieß die Sprache und ich bin sicher, dass alle Bemühung Wert sein wird. Weiter so!

Honestly, the only way to truly learn German is to immerse yourself in the language. Meaning: Watch Movies in German, listen to German music or German audio book, read German books, and naturally talk German at every opportunity. But truly, talking just helps you to get over your own nervousness, it's the reading and listening which eventually clicks in your mind.

(Native German speaker here) I think what's probably most difficult about German is perfecting it. One could get to a level where one is able to communicate quite effectively in a reasonable amount of time, but figuring out all those details of
'why yes, let's split this word into multiple parts and scatter it across the whole sentence',
'no, this is *another* exception to that rule that applies 50% of the time, tops'
'you can't just concatenate all those words and invent a new one' - 'yes I can, but there's rules on how to do it' - 'ok, cool, what rules?' - 'ehhh, if it sounds wrong to a native speaker it is probably wrong?'
must be a nightmare if you haven't learned it during childhood

Jacob, I can only repeat: Please DO talk to and learn with your GF! And she SHALL/MUST correct you, shall answer in German and so on. It's such a great chance being together with a native speaker, and it is really necessary for you to train and try all the things you learned, at your home, in your leisure time, during excursions and so on. It's necessary for you BOTH to leave your own comfort zones to achieve any progress! As I wrote before: Take the sex of the nouns as they are, without any questioning – just memorizing, like the plural forms or the different time forms of the verbs. Believe me, it's the same for a German learning English: I go, he goes, I went, I have gone .... :) or goose/geese, mouse/mice and so on.

Viel Glück :)

Take it from a German teacher: You can do it!

Man lernt mehr aus seinen Fehler, als aus seinen Erfolgen. Also freue Dich über jeden Fehler.

As we can see every year with the american exchange students learning german within a few months, it is, as you said, about confidence and the need if not pressure, to do so. The articles aren't as important as everyone says. As soon as we germans realize you as a foreigner trying to speak the language, we are willing to accept your errors and we will try to teach you.
Just go on speaking. This will improve your confidence and your skills.
btw, did you get a new MacBook or did you choose the better camera instead?

Hannover ist der Geburtsort vom Hochdeutschen!
Niedersachsen spricht das beste Hochdeutsch. Das macht es leichter die Sprache zu lernen, als in Bayern usw..

How much do the classes cost? you can DM me on Social media for that information. I have found prices for Dutch here in amsterdam and I personally think WOW!.... but maybe it isn't that expensive.

Good luck for today. When do you get your results?

Will you be doing a B1 class next?

German is a grammatically richer language than English - with a grammatical gender and grammatical case system for the nouns and more complex verb structures than English. That makes it harder for English native speakers.
My bête noir is which preposition to use as often the preposition in German is different from those used in English and I have to think about it.
