Well explained, need to post this on pit boss smoker club on Facebook this is the number one question. No one reads the manual for startups.

I learned the hard way about leaving the lid closed when you turn it on....boom!

You need to press the prime button until you hear pellets drop into the fire bowl upon first start up or anytime you empty the pellet hopper.

Why leave the lid open to start? I've had a Louisiana CS570 for over 6 years, and I never leave the lid open to start. Is this per Pit Boss start- up instructions? Or just your personal method?

Is it supposed to feed a bunch of pellets during the smoke procedure?

I’m thinking of buying a pit boss pellet grill. I was wondering if the grill produce a big amount of smoke when starting it up and also when grilling of course? We will be living very close to neighbours so I’m wondering if the neighbours might be disturbed by me grilling?

Just got my pit boss pro 1100. I have to wait for it to clear up to put it together. Once you preheat. Say you want to go down to 250...should you open the lid to let the excess heat out and then close it once it gets back down to the desired temp?

I just bought one of these. Every time I start it up. A massive amount of smoke comes out until the fan kicks on. Is that normal?

There is nothing in pit boss instructions telling you to preheat the grill to 350°. Their instructions are set to smoke lid open, when you hear the torchy roar set it to your desired temperature and go. IMHO of the decent brands of grills/smokers pit boss is at the bottom. Their customer service is god-awful, and their grills are so hit and miss it's like playing Russian roulette to buy one. Stick with traeger, Green mountain, camp stove, and Oklahoma Joe. No guarantee you won't have problems, but a pit boss is a crap shoot. If you need to know a trick to make it work properly then it is a piece of junk.
