EQ Tips For A Clear Low-End in a HEAVY Mix

People constantly ask me how they can combat their mix's messy, murky, unclear low-end with EQ on a regular basis and the answer is simple:

Make proper room for stuff in your mix's low-end!

In my latest tutorial, I show you exactly how I approach my mix's low-end like a "layered cake".

Everything needs to occupy it's own space down there and the good news is that creating space for everything in your mix's low-end ain't rocket science.

It doesn’t get mentioned enough how quick and concise your videos are. There’s no useless waffle like most other YouTube videos, just useful information. Keep up the good work.

Hey Bobby, this video really helped me out a lot with clearing up the low end in my mixes. Would you consider making a video about mid range management? Thanks so much for the amazing content you put out!

Great vid. I've said this before and it's similar to your approach. Kick rolled off at 40, Bass 60, Rythm Guitar 80-100. This works well for me, because as you've said, Low end energy builds up QUICK.

Great video Bobby! I love your "to the point approach. I've been rolling off the kick around 30hz and the bass at 75-80hz but I'm excited to try your approach with the current tune I'm mixing. Btw - I'm using a couple of your IRs on this tune from the free octopack you generously gave out. Thanks man!

Might also consider the guitar cab resonance somewhere 90-150hz if managed can clean up mud as well. Good vid Bobby!

Low-End is usually really hard to get very clear.
I know you've been over this a few times, but about Superior Drummer 3, the core Library seems not overcompressed to me, there is no noises or bleed etc. Do you think even the Core Library from SD3 is way too compressed?

Hey Bobby, I wonder how much difference does the curve in the cut makes? For example, I notice you tend for a 24dB curve, I usually use a 48dB curve. I set my kick and 30Hz, and my bass at 65 to 70Hz, my rhythm guitars take a beefy cut (also a 48dB) at right around 100Hz (less or more as seems needed for the song, as well as a similar cut on everything above 10 to 12kHz). Does my choice of a more extreme curve make any difference? If answering this on the Mixcrypt seems helpful, feel free to address it there instead or as well as here. :)

So just making sure that the “hz” levels don’t conflict you will get that wide polished professional sound even before mastering?

One of your earlier videos on low passing has been a huge help in clarity and headroom in my mixes, So thanks a ton!
Do your cutoff frequencies change per production?

For me, take time to have a simple vision of a mix.

Everything but the kick, bass and rhythm guitars above 100 Hz? It works pretty well for me, and with 24 dB HPFs enough of that low-end gets cut but without being extreme.
