Subtractive EQ For A Clear And Punchy Mix - Metal Mixing Tips

It's not always about adding.

Most of us naturally feel like we should be adding stuff to our mixes to help make them shine and sit alongside pro-level, polished productions.

Add a little compression.
Add an EQ boost here and there.
Add some saturation.
Add some delay.
Add some reverb.
Add some stereo widening....

There truth is that what you take away is sometimes more important than what you add when dialing in a pro-sounding mix.

Great video. It is almost like watching me working on a mix as I follow the same kind of routine. I try to get the sounds I want during writing and production and then massage them into place with the method you are showing. I track all my stuff at home in my studio. Breath of fresh air this channel as it seems so many others are now shop fronts for plugin companies. Cheers.

Question I see that you mostly just go for the the pair of Rhythm guitars instead of quad tracking any particular reason or just a preference ?

Nice tips.
one question comes to my mind.
when you have speedy double kick parts in the song, it seems that the low end grow up without control.
how can i deal with it?

Vocals sound low in the mix or is it just me?

Maybe too much 2.5k on guitars present. Other than that it's excellent.

Cutting -9.6 dB with more than an octave Q is hardly "a little bit". It's a moderate cut at the least. While I pretty much share your views about subtractive EQ, not calling your EQ choices with their correct names ruined this video for me right in the middle of the third minute.

all the way from Djent Deathcore to Rock ones !
