My elephant in the room regarding the Falcon is that one _should_ easily be able to see the right side to the front of the ship from the cockpit, almost obstructively, but it's not in any shots looking out. You'd never be able to physically see anything from 6 oclock all the way to 11 oclock.

Concerning the head, the Haynes Owner's Workshop Manual of the Falcon does have one it its blueprints. It's located in the crew's quarters and is called a "refresher, " with a sonic shower opposite.

When I noticed that other such reference books lacked the inclusion of the necessary facilities, and having received engineering training from the USN, I wondered what else might have left out of the supposed "plans" in the books out there.

The most notable of these is "Star Wars Complete Vehicles Incredible Cross-Sections." When I noticed the lack in one of the vehicles in which such a room was needed, I carefully examined the rest of them. They were also missing a head or refresher. I reached out to both the publisher and author by email. The publisher never responded, but the author was pissed off that I had even the tiniest bit of criticism of his work. His reply was rude and disrespectful. Interestingly enough, he didn't deny he'd left the head out of his plans.

Personally, I think he just forgot to include this necessary component in his zeal to cram as much technical "stuff" into his plans as possible, ignoring the mundane in favor of the more exciting things.

Another early design for the Falcon ended up being the Tantive IV in A New Hope.

Love the Millennium Falcon, such a badass and unique ship.

The model for the first design was also slightly remodelled to become the Tantive IV, the model was about twice the size as the Star Destroyer that captured it at the beginning of the movie! :D

Another interesting reason for the position of the cockpit was personal preference. Assuming my memory isn't failing me, alongside durability, most corellian cargo ships of the same or similar class as the falcon were known for their modularity, with various parts of the ships being relatively "easily" swapped out and replaced with other components or simply rearranged. Thus, if the owner of the ship wanted it to be so, they could replace the side mounted cockpit with a module that would fit between the cargo clamps, placing the cockpit on the front of the ship.

3:18 you can actually get many variations on where the cockpit is on a stock YT-1300 freighter, as the ship itself is very modular.

The ship has a huge history in Legends. When it was first manufactured, it was fed too much fuel and the thruster control jets spiraled the ship out of control and nearly destroyed the assembly line. Then it had gotten several names. Two of which was Stellar Envoy until it had crashed into a cliff, then was in the process of being restored was named Gone to Pieces, before eventually getting renamed the Millennium Falcon. The source material can be found in Star Wars Millennium Falcon, where Han and Leia's grand daughter Allana asks to go on a little space trip to try and unravel the mysterious history of the ship and actually encounter one of the previous owners before Lando when it was the Stellar Envoy.

In the cockpit issue, old star wars guides said the design had a modular cockpit design that it could be on left, right, or center

Secret 11. The bathrooms in Star Wars are called "Refreshers" . The Han Solo trilogy from the early eighties describes the "refresher" on the Falcon.

In the plastic model universe of Star Wars there's an interesting looping of designs:
The original Millennium Falcon model was bashed together from existing plastic kits.
When MPC released their SW plastic kit models (circa 1980's) they were essentially
'copying' their competitor's kits albeit highly repurposed. lol.
If you compare an R2-D2 kit to the Millennium Falcon kit you can see a few
shared kit elements that are different only in scale.
For the record Joe Johnston is a jenius. There's a real (reel?) art to this kind of kit-bashing and
guys like Joe Johnston and Mark Stetson are some of the best in the business. They make it look easy.

I miss the days when a craft had to be out of a planet's gravity well to jump to lightspeed

Yup. When looking at photos of the original model, I spotted both an American Sherman tank suspension, AND a German Panzer IV suspension on the side, in front of the cockpit...

Here’s another fact: Fuel wasn’t mentioned in Star Wars until Episode VIII: The Last Jedi!

Or at least - I think

As for the placement of the cockpit, the original plan was for the Falcon to turn when in flight - putting the cockpit in a more sensible position up top.
