I’ve got an ecoboost fix, it’s called “Toyota Yaris”.

My 2002 Ford Mondeo has a timing chain. Still going strong. Just did a 400 + mile round trip to Cornwall. Will be keeping the car as long as possible.

I have an HNC in polymer technology. Rubber can withstand a load under certain conditions mostly under compression, but In the heat and stretching environment in an engine, good luck with that. One of the reasons why my son was recommended a pug 108

I have a hobby that I've not played with for a few years, due to real life crap getting in the way! It's a 1975 Ford Cortina 1.6 XL. I cannot imagine anyone with a new car today still owning it in 49 years time!

This needs to hit Citreon, Peugeot and Vauxhall too.... to deal with the Puretech engine...

There is bits coming off the belt while it's been used and degrading in oil then blocks the oil pump which causes oil starvation and then catastrophic failure the only way it can be fixed if they replaced the timing belt with a timing chain.

3:02 Ford has authorized entire engine replacement as a temporary repair, pending a solution which will be the final repair...wow. So quite possible the third engine. What a great design, Ford!

I don't know the whole story but by the sound of it I know more than you. In this country Ford made a change in the design of the oil pump tensioner bracket in about 2014, it's that part that started to fail after a lot of miles. Earlier engines didn't have a fault with this tensioner. I think it was about 2019 Ford switched from a belt to a chain for the camshafts. I believe about the same time they extended the oil pump shaft so that it now is also a balancer shaft. This of course means it will have to be "timed" previous to this it didn't need to the teeth on the oil pump belt were there but not required. So the current state of play is the 1ltr Ecoboost has a chain timing belt and a balancer shaft. I think the failures of the timing belt were due mostly from poor maintenance. Many buyers of Fords were attracted to the long oil change intervals and the high power but good economy. They didn't realise that this engine used a lot of high tech ideas which at the time were cutting edge, especially at the price. These engines need a high standard of use and maintenance. They are like a Porsche engine, in fact when they came out they had a higher specific power output than a Bugatti Veyron. Yet owners let them go to a full 10, 000 between oil changes, used the wrong oil and probably drove them badly, by which I mean lugging in too high a gear and rarely revving out to the red line. I have one of these engines, I use the correct oil, try to change it more frequently than the service interval. I try and keep the engine above 2, 000 rpm and frequently get up to 6, 000 and even hit the rev limiter by accident. I had the belts changed at 125, 000 miles, there were no bits in the strainer and the belts were in excellent condition. It's now up to 137, 000 miles, uses no oil and on a long run including a lot of motorway does 52 mpg. You can't rev the engine out for long as the boost is reduced in 1st gear and 60 in 2nd hits the rev limiter, giving a 0-60 time of under 10s. On British roads you can't rev it in 3rd because that is as near as dammit 100 mph. It won't do the geared max revs in 4th since it's over geared but will get to 120. I feel lucky to have such a brisk performing car that is also so cheap to run. Perhaps I'm lucky all round, but I suspect it's more to do with good maintenance. Would I buy a newer one yes, I like the idea of the balancer shaft. I'm not so happy with the idea of a chain for the cams as that will be a little harsher. And if the chain guides are as badly engineered as those in the Mini Cooper and the BMW One Series they will need changing every 50, 000 miles. That's an engine out job.

Bought Focus in April 2023 with a full wet belt replacement & so far, so good. But, I've been made aware of the flaws so my next vehicle will be a Diesel again. 😮

Just found out my eco ford car has this wet belt. Absolutely gutted. I'm just learning cars. Thanks for the vid

Spoke to the service manager at my dealer about this. Their view was that UK cars did not need to be recalled because the belts here are made of different rubber that doesn't degrade. Tried arguing long and hard, but it felt very much like a party line he'd been told to take and stick to. SO frustrating.

Will the repair be available to buyers of secondhand ecoboost cars

Were on out 3rd Ford 1.0 ecoboost powered car, never had any real issues (knock on wood). We do yearly oil changes at the dealer and sell/trade it in before 80k kms for a newer model (thus avoiding the timebomb and retaining value) I do sympathize with the next owners though 😂

Let’s hope it’s more that just the tensioner arm, which is something of a decoy. Replacing the belt with a chain, if possible, would be the ideal permanent fix.

Today we his 72, 225 & Boom the dreaded oil pressure warning followed by Camshaft warning codes. Game over

Mate you've missed out a HUGE issue. In the USA this ONLY applies to 1.0 ecoboost with automatic gearbox and with a specific problem of a tensioner failing.
Your typical 1 litre ecoboost in the UK does not have an oil pump belt tensioner.
None of this applies to the vast majority of cars here, but still they continue to fail for reasons ford will know of but dare not reveal.

Is it coming for the Ford transit custom?

Both belts are a problem but the timing belt always deteriorates first and under greater demand. Ford have lied on picking on the oil pump belt. Yes, it’s a problem but 90% plus are the timing belt. This design of is a total disaster. Go for a timing chain or dry cambelt.

My 2009 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 has a timing chain, and after 16 years, it doesn't burn oil between services.
