Original Sin (Aquinas 101)

"After original sin, human nature with its powers as derived from Adam is now just itself. It's left to itself. We're all on our own." -T.C. O’Brien

Original sin leaves us to our own devices. It is not a direct inclination to evil—it simply leaves us to ourselves, which we were never meant to be. We now need grace, not only to be united to God, but to become truly human once again.

Original Sin (Aquinas 101) - Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P.

This makes me feel so much better in my struggle against sin. I think, by God's grace, i have overcome many mortal sins, but I still struggle with temptation. Certain things, prayer and time with God's word, focus my mind on God and make resisting temptation very easy. But sometimes the temptation starts in the body or comes out of nowhere. Im glad to hear this is not a failing on my part. Still i wish i didnt have to struggle with it. I long for the day when i can no longer sin and im no longer tempted to sin.

The powerful content is appreciated.
I hope the level of this presentation could be presented to mid teens. I was a religious Ed. Instructor to those preparing for confirmation. They would understand this.

Thank you Father! We really need grace to be more human and to live out our purpose in life which will ultimately lead us to God. We'd be lost without the grace of God.

I've been studying a lot of stoicism and one of the objectives of the stoics is to direct our wills and actions towards nature, that's a similar concept as catholicism, the difference being you change nature with God, I think that reason will bring me back to the church eventually, great videos, I still need to read the summa theologiae

Even though I am not a catholic, I tend to share some of your views. I dug deep on your statement that original sin is not a direct inclination to evil, but a "leaving us to our own devices". Could not this statement be understood, as saying that original sin inclined our mind and will to selfishness and self-sufficiency, that per se, separated from God, are an "evil inclination"?

I still want to see a video where you explain how Is it that we inherit Adam's guilt.

Thank you Father, this is very helpful. But my problem with Original Sin is that I don’t think I’ve ever seen an explanation for why we inherit Original Sin from Adam in the first place? Do you have an answer?

Many things come to my mind with this subject, one si that people who struggle with addictions will be aided by understanding that our efforts to leave addiction ain't enough by themselves however it seems sometimes that God isn't giving his grace to leave them, it is quite tricky to align selfwill with God's grace.

I once had suspicions about the idea of original sin. Now I know: it’s human constructed.

thank you so much, I have watched all of these talks, they are very enlightening. One question please: how does this square with evolution? Are we to believe that there was no illness and death in creation before human sin?

How would you identify on a practical/historical level the Original Sin? At some point we became human, meaning that Adam and Eve were the first humans to have intellect and will whereas their fellow ape-humans didn't. Or is it a metaphor for human nature which is always created in Grace but that does automatically fall out of Grace as a natural inclination of our animal nature?

But Adam and Eve are mythical, how can something transfer from myth to real humans

When we mutated from the grace of the plants or Nature, is when we became able to choose: brain or body. When we use too much brain, we eat the fruit. When we use too much body, we eat the fruit. Use neither too much brain, nor too much body, and ye shall be healthy and balanced :)

So it seems like original sin then is not so much a stain on the soul but the lack of the preternatural gifts along with the inclination to sin? Would this be a fair assessment?

What does it mean to be created in grace?

If Adam and Eve had "every virtue" in its fullness, how could they suffer from pride and disobey God?
