Toyota Troubleshooting (Automatic Lift Gate): How do I Re-Calibrate the Power Back Door in my SUV?

In today's video, I will be demonstrating how to re-calibrate the back door on vehicles equipped with an automatic lift gate. There may be some instances that cause the power back door to need to be re-initialized. Luckily, this is a super easy thing to do!

If you have an automatic lift gate, ensure you are not manually pushing or pulling the door, as this may cause the door to require calibration.

As a single mom, this is a nightmare. Keeps happening to me. It's so hard to closed and open the trunk. I had a mini van, Toyota, never had this issue. It's so frustrating. This should be fixed in all cars that are experienced this type of issue.

I just bought the 2024 Sequoia Capstone, and the lift gate would just beep twice at me when I pressed the remote. The on-screen setup was a bit different but when I finally found the PBD settings, it was already turned off. Turning it on fixed the problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed...That's real Old School...We couldn't use my wife's Rav4 for yesterday's family outing; It was stuck in the up position, and I didn't know (and was scared to damage it by forcing it down). had to cram up in my car. We were then going to set up an appointment with the Toyota Dealer. But we said, "let's try YOUTUBE!" We found this video first and, even though hers is an older model and the settings arrows are on the right and not the left, in 5 minutes the liftgate is back working as it should! Two days in on a second hand, like new 2015 RAV4 I caught myself beginning to close the back lift door and immediately realized that split second action totally caused the auto close/open to fail! Very disappointed in this flaw as a life long Toyota owner. I’m hopeful this will work- thank you!

I have a 2020 Toyota Highlander XLE and the back door would move about 3 to 4 inches and then go back up. I followed your instructions and the power back door is working without any problems....thanks. I purchased a bumper to bumper warranty because of all the power and electronic stuff on the newer suv. I figured it would cost a fortune to fix some of these power features and Senors if I had to pay out of pocket.

I’ve had this problem with my 2021 RAV4 and took it to the dealer and they reset it before I knew about this fix. But two days later I went to open it using the rear tailgate button and it didn’t work again. I’m afraid now that I’m going to have to pay the $1, 400 for new struts, which is crazy for a 4 year old car. Toyota needs to address this.
