The Surprising Real Story Behind Frozen 2

Frozen 2 Is Based On Many True Stories!

While the first Frozen might have tried to pay homage to a handful of Scandinavian and Nordic cultures, there were some aspects that they just didn’t get right. It’s clear that the movie is set in a fictional version of Norway, what with the accents, music, reindeer, and costumes, but even though Arendale might not be real, these cultures are! It might surprise you to know that one of the dominant cultures in Frozen 2 is based off of a very real, specific group of nomadic reindeer farmers known as the Sami people.
In the first movie, the filmmakers went ahead with some research and that’s about it. But in Frozen two, they went the extra mile in order to get things right. Which is great! There is nothing lost by including the voices of the people whose culture you are borrowing from, it’s a total win-win situation. The group gets to feel understood and respected, and the movie is only made better and more interesting by being accurate! Who better to tell their stories than the people that the stories are actually about, right? Check out the video below to find out all about this amazing culture, and just how the Frozen team went about collaborating with them.
Be warned, there are some Frozen 2 spoilers in the video, so if you haven’t made it out to the theatre to check it out yet, what are you waiting for?? It’s Frozen 2!

I don’t really watch that many Disney movies, but Frozen 2 was a pretty good movie, I just watched it because of all the hype surrounding it.

As a Sami girl, seeing my people, my culture which has been ripped away from us not too long ago, it's truly a blessing! It makes me and so many others so so happy! One problem I DO have with the movie is that there's so few releases that includes the Sami version. I, after countless of days of trying to get my hands on it, has finally found one that has the sami version included and it will hopefully come to me soon (As I had to pre-order it)
I also recommend listening to the sami version of the soundtrack! It's absolutely beautiful and I personally like it more than the English and Norwegian version. ^-^

When I heard, that they are making a Sami version of the movie I got so hyped! You guys have NO idea what it feels like to for the first time have a movie, that is not a documentary, being spoken in your native language! It's "only" in Northern Sami, but still, it's a step in the right direction, especially since many of us still struggle with racism and surpression against us. We haven't even been legal for that long and in some parts of northern Europe (looking at you Sweden), we're still seen as a "foreign minority". Still a lot to do, but hey, we take it one day at a time, and soon people will call us Sami, not Laplander and our Country will be known as Sapmi again, not Lapland. (Lapp btw is an insult)

Screen Rant: The Sami culture is beautiful and deserves recognition.
Also Screen Rant: we didn't know a thing about it until we researched this video

Thank you for this video! As a part of the sami people this makes me very proud. One thing I want to add, which I find very interesting, is that 40 years ago the Norwegian government wanted to build a dam in sami area, and that would ruin sami areas and even put an entire sami town under water. This caused uproar within the sami culture. This caused the Norwegian people to be aware of the sami peoples rights. The sami people lost and the dam was build. But after that the sami people got their rights.

The Sami were also in Netflix's Klaus.

Yikes, that pronunciation of Arendelle is horrific

Same approach they took with Moana. Their positive experience with that is probably what encouraged them to do the same for this.

Even a sadder fact is that Sami is an official language in norway. We have 3 official languages, and two of them are taught at school nation wide, except from Sami. Sami is only taught at a few schools up north, and isn't really mandatory, but the two other languages are.

"Made up kingdom"? Arendal is in South-East Norway. I have ancestors from there. And Kristof was raised by trolls, so biologically Sami or not, it doesn't make sense to consult on Sami culture for his character (1st movie only). "Literally nothing to lose by including the people who's story you are telling": While it is important to consult them when telling their story, it does cost money to do this, and is irrelevant in the first movie because it features no Sami.

After the Pitch Meeting series, this is the best video I've seen on this channel. It was interesting, informative, and didn't go way longer than necessary/sprinkle in extra stuff to pad the run time. Good job!

Yea, but it's still a made up kingdom. There's no need for it to be spot on.

Man, all these comments about "oh it's just a cartoon." Okay but it's a big-budget animated movie that accurately represented a culture so why can't that be cool by itself? I for one thought this information was cool.
