You should talk about how the Bismarck’s electrically slewed twin 105mm AA guns could not slew/target slow enough for the gunners to keep the Swordfish in its sights.

The director systems were complex and extremely heavy, they gyro stabilised the complete unit, whereas other navy’s stabilized just the sight and range finder.

The system used to calculate rate of change of range against an approaching aircraft was also incredibly crude. It essentially amounted to: Draw a line on paper, as the aircraft advances the line curves, and a wire grid is used to measure the curve, giving a rate. This system was no longer used by any other navy as a slow aircraft didn’t produce a curved line, therefore being unable to be tracked correctly.

It’s something you hear brought up, but it’s only the twin 105’s that suffered from this problem, since the 37mm and 20mm AA guns were aimed directly by their respective gunners with no computation.

Still, the 37’s and 20’s also had some horrendous aspects to them to. I recall a Bismarck veteran who claimed that the blast from the 105’s totally blinded the 37 gunners with smoke, as well as near deaf. Even then, the 37’s only had an rpm of 30, compared to the US’s 40mm Bofors rpm of 120.

The only good AA gun on the thing was the 20mm, though even they only had 20 round clips, and there were only 12 on the whole ship. (Though some sources claim 20)

Overall the whole ship kinda just suffered from an awful AA system, which is probably why it failed to shoot down a single aircraft.

Anyways, keep up with the videos! I enjoy them a lot.

If there is one ship that in my opinion deserves more respect and rightfully deserved recognition its the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau as they not only performed exceptionally well against the Royal Navy but they were also very well designed with a very low silhouette but the only real flaw they had was the gun calibre wich was only 11 inches.

It's overrated for sure. The reason it's hyped up is because of the narrative that was spone around it. It was one of the battles that was needed to boost morale during the dark early days of the 2nd World War. So, they pumped up how deadly it was just so that john public would feel better about the way it was sunk

Ngl, in the battle of the Denmark sea if it was a fair fight with Prince of wales not having to steer into the waves which limited which range finders it could use and if she didn’t have severe breakdowns to her turrets, Prince would have absolutely ripped Bismarck to shreds

The Bismarks hype is probably due to the fact that it was feared. Not because of its specs but because it could kill merchant ships and their escorts with ease, and was a good capital ship. This has been taken from that context and moved to, "Bismark was the best ship afloat, and couldn't be sunk." Which is aided by the skuttleing conversation.
In my opinion, The Bismark was a good ship, but her up armourment was a negative in her final moments. As well, her hype is deserved, but over blown.

The problem Bismarck had was that it was designed in the mid to late 1930's as a fleet battleship but then they attempted to use it as a commerce raider. It was a victim of mission creep and changing technology. It was a pretty good ship design with a few flaws that could have been worked out with refits had it not been sunk but wasn't used as intended.

Sunk by a battleship group, the biplane helped in the way a child finds his dads claw hammer for a building project.

The swordfish was smaller, the Bismarck's aa is not designed to deal with biplanes

The Bismarck cost 200 million reichmarks, the average type 7 cost about 3 million. All the bismarck did was sink an old and outdated battlecruiser before being sent to the bottom herself. The Germans should have built more, it would have made our job in the Atlantic far easier, especially with air superiority

To be fair. British pilots generally described Bismarck's flak fire as accurate. She did succeed in scoring numerous hits, and even drove off two of the attacking planes.

However, due to the light construction of the Swordfish, the fuses of the German shells failed to Ignite and the shells just passed through the planes.

Furthermore when the British planes attacked, visibility was somewhat poor, making it difficult for spotters to correct the aa fire.

Interestingly, even the Americans noted the sturdyness of some Japanese biplanes late in the war, suggesting that an other BB in Bismarck's situation, could have experienced much the same difficulies.

If Hood had targeted Bismarck from the off and got a few hits in, it would've changed the battle and I doubt we would really have ever discussed the Bismarck like we do today. But that's just if bits and maybes. I put Hood and Bismarck in the same place in my head as Titanic. Ultimately great ships with great stories.

Well her sister tirpitz is underrated just cause she spent her career in a fjord. But tirpitz was more powerful than Bismarck and was such a big threat that the British literally sent tons of air raids on tirpitz which only annoyed the giant until a tall boy bomb was dropped but tirpitz was actually meant to be with Bismarck in reihnubung and the two scharnhorst ships but the two scharnhorst battleships needed repairs and tirpitz was still going through crew training but imagine the nightmare tovey would have had if the 4 German capital ships were together considering what just 1 did. Also bismarck was able to withstand shells from Rodney who has bigger guns as Bismarck had more armor. The Yamato was somewhat practical but it was not really used correctly and had a major weakness its bow. The bow was under armored and vulnerable to torpedo attack. This became apparent when musashi sank because of this. Plus a large battleship would be a major target which meant the enemy will send anything they had to destroy it. Germany had a similar problem but they lacked escorts. Germany focused more on capital ships mainly battleships. But Erich raeder wanted to build Graf zeppelin as he understood the importance of a carrier but Hitler being Hitler thought bigger was better plus German goring refused to even hand over pilots to the kriegsmarine but Erich raeder also wasn’t the one who exactly wanted to build so many capital ships that was Hitler plus Hitler was asking him to do something that was practically impossible and also operation Barbarossa should’ve been planned later since Germany still had a chance of success as even the cracking of enigma u-boats still became a big issue and if Britain starved then they would have to surrender. But Germany did have a few practical designs such as the H-class ships. They had descently sized guns and were not crazy. But not all were good. After h42 the designs became stupid as h41 had 16.5 inch guns but unlike Rodney they were more modernized and just because a gun is big doesn’t mean it always has the same effect as the date also matters. Sources disagree widely on the gun size but I would say it’s about 17-20 inches. A 17 inch gun is a bit practical but once it reaches 18 or above then you need to calm down. But if the h class ships were built then the German navy would not need to build so many capital ships as those ships are enough to do serious damage to Britain. H44 however is more of giant boat meant for bombing practice. The German surface fleet had no chance of winning but the u-boats did as radars were not implemented in large numbers yet and even then were still hard to detect. the German surface fleet however would have still taken years to properly function.

1) the bigger and better they made the Bismarck out to be the more important & heroic it was to sink it and 2) being sunk will always add to the allure & attention, weirdly
