Garbage Disposal Maintenance
Cut up and put a lemon or lime in your garbage disposal. The citric acid breaks down the food particles that are stuck and get bacteria or clog your pipes. This helps with smell and cleaning.

Clean the blades by grinding up some ice cubes in the disposal once a month. This clears the pipes by agitating and breaking down chunks in your disposal.

To get rust out inside (if you have metal pipes), put 1 T vegetable oil down the disposal, run with some water. Vegetable oil doesn't stick to pipes.

When putting food down the disposal, use cold water. Keep oils in the food more solid so it doesn't stick to the pipes.

Plastic pipes are better because they don't pit like metal pipes can.

Use baking soda and vinegar for slow drains.

Food is ok to put down the disposal. Always run cold water first. Turn on the water first, then turn on the disposal. Wait until you hear the sound when it's finally ground out before you turn off the water. If you have sticky or starchy foods, run it really slowly - things like potatoes or rice. Don't overload it. Leftovers ok as long as you're running water but smaller pieces of food.
