I'm a skateboarder and have a really good balance. I thought ice skating would be easy. I tried to do a hockey stop in rentals, long story short I tore my rotator cuff from landing on my shoulder so hard 😅😂 I'm hooked!! I can't wait to go ice skating again!! I'm definitely buying my own skates first

As someone who's worked behind the rental counter I would always be happy to give out a different pair of skates, don't feel embarrassed to ask. Most of the time it was so busy that I wouldn't even notice the flaws of the skate, was just trying to keep up with the line and not make people wait too long. But as you said in the vid, the next pair may not be so good either, I guess it depends on the rink but where I worked pretty much all the skates were worn out and dull. Especially the small and average sized skates -- the larger sizes (like 11 and up) were generally a bit better since fewer people fit those. I was at an outdoor rink and we had a super limited budget since our profit each year was very weather dependent.

When I was at my rink, they gave my sister some skates which were like normal shoes with blades on them. No ankle support, the laces were literally shredded then tied into a knot. This was when I started ice skating so I couldn’t even help her. Sometimes I wish ice skating rinks took better care of skates 🤦‍♀️

Thank you for helping me as always!

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but I had a slight sizing issue with the rentals when I first tried ice skating. I suffer from ingrown nails on the "big" toe on each foot, and after an hour my toes were bloodied. The rentals probably needed to be a half size up, but they served their purpose. As you know, I am seeking my own skates now. It's been a couple years since I've been skating because I only have a seasonal rink locally, but I am looking at traveling once a week for lessons until time comes that I move to a city with a rink(move is pending over the next few months to a year). As a diabetic, my doctors have told me that movement is good for me, so I figure(no pun intended) if I have to exercise, might as well be enjoyable.

Went skating for the first time in like 15 years last week, obviously using rentals. Having heard a couple horror stories earlier, I at least felt the edge - it did remind me of a knife, so I suspect they were decently sharpened. (The rink also offers sharpening, so they probably do sharpen them regularly)

I don't know what exactly the difference was, but I felt super comfortable on the ice. The last time I went skating, I got on the ice and found myself on my butt almost immediately. This time, I could even go at decent speed, and stop somewhat quickly. (Just doing a tight 360 - hockey stop is a bit much to figure out on your own in two hours)

I do find it interesting that you said many rinks just have you going counter-clockwise. For the first hour, we were going clockwise, then they resurfaced the ice, and for the second hour it was counter-clockwise.
The switch was very much needed, too - my left leg did start to feel very tired :D

Just went ice skating and the rental skates had rust on them. no edges. no ankle support. and no toe pick. I saw people skating with their shoes sideways it was terrible!

Enjoyed the video ! I was impressed with the thoroughness of information — some of these points are pretty nontrivial.

The last time I used rental skates, they smelled like something died in them, the laces were too long, and skating on them felt like I taped butter knives to my feet. NEVER AGAIN!

The rink I go to is just a seasonal rink that gets built every year. I went for the first time in December and went again 2 more times. Each time I had different struggles in getting out on the ice or away from the wall. I'm not sure if it was the rental skates that were the problem or if it was just me haha, but I do want to buy my own skates. Only problem is I live in a small town so we don't have any skate shops around here..

Hello! I’m a fellow figure skater myself and I wanted to ask you, how do you get yourself to fall? I cannot get myself to go fast enough or do harder stuff because I don’t want to fall. I look around the rink to find many other people falling (hard!) and getting up like it’s nothing when I barely hit my knee and almost cry. Is it just high pain tolerance or are there some tips or tricks? Please tell me your secret!

Our rink is pretty good. They do sharpen the skates. They can't always keep on top of it but they do send small batches of pairs up to the shop for sharpening. Public skate during the week is two hours and fifteen minutes, three and a half hours weekend evenings. During public skate they zam every 1 hour (takes fifteen minutes) and change direction after each zam. Laces kept up on too. They will not let you walk off the rubber padded area. You have to take the skates off to say, go to your car.

When I got my ice skates 2 weeks ago ish I wanted the ice flys, but because I told the guy that was helping me In that moment when I was just looking I told him I could do a waltz jump so he recommended the Ella’s or the diamonds but really I needed an emerald or a sparkle snow

Odd, my local ice rink told me to ask for my normal shoe size and my group (I was going as a trip) old me it was best to wear thick socks. Edit: my local ice rink gives the skates out for free.

I recently watched your other video of the mistakes when buying skates and stated that I had trouble using the skates with laces when I rented them at a rink and you recommended this video.

Would you say I should give the lace skates another try when I buy my own? I was going to buy the kind with buckles but your other video mentioned those aren’t the best. I want something in good quality that would give me the best performance.

In Lithuania the biggest problemis that men skates for figure skating do not exist :( In rental for men they'll give you only ice hockey skates. Also, in sports shops they sell only women skates for figure skating :(
