Just when I already thought Yuri was the bravest person ever, he impresses me again.

honestly everything about Yuri Gagarin's flight is unbelievable. the fact that we know when he took off to the millisecond level, but only know when he landed to the closest minute based on his watch. the fact that he had to run and find a telephone to call back to Moscow.
the man is just unbelievably brave.

Yuri: So how do i land?
Scientist: Uhhhh....
Yuri: I can land it can't I?

If you can walk away from a crash, that’s a good landing
If you can use the plane the next day, that’s a great landing

"Ah screw it, whatever. Just give the guy a parachute and tell him to jump out at the right time"

The Soviets also sent them with a gun. As a backup against wild animals likes bears and wolves when they fell back to earth in a remote area. The gun was an unique 3 barreled weapon where two barrels on top shot 40 gauge shotgun shells and the bottom one fired AK rounds.

I love how the Russian family that helped him to get to the telephone was so shocked at what they're seeing when Yuri landed out of nowhere that he had to explain to them that he's a human and a Soviet citizen to that family, not an alien.

Hey SciShow! Have y'all considered having her as another SciShow host? I think she'll make a great SciShow host!!

I like the way you say "we". Science is the greatest project humanity has ever embarked on. Knowledge transcends borders.

Parachutes are difficult even with model rockets. We used to launch them out in the desert as kids, and parachute failures were pretty common. Completely trashes your rocket if the parachute never opens.😢😂

A fun fact: The Soviets denied that Gagarin had ejected, because at the time the FAI rules stated that for a flight to count for the purpose of setting records, the pilot had to land with their craft.

Imagine explaining to him that they were sending him to space but getting him to land safely was too tricky so he just had to eject out!

Can't believe the rocket can lift yuri massive BALLS OF STEEL

I love it when "we" did something, and it's actually about the depths of humanity achievement

the whole race to the moon thing between two huge countries still makes me laugh a little because it's such a childish idea but in such a dramatic context. 'Ha, ha, I'm gonna get there first!'

talking about airflow. one of the major issues with building weapons is that each type of plane has different airflow around it. You think you can drop a 500 lb bomb at .5 mach from any plane? Nope. Some will actually have that bomb fly right back up and crash that plane

2 points on Gagrin's ejection:
>he was a professional pilot whick makes his desigion so much more logical
>his cabin was a rough redisign of a cabin made for dogs so trusting it to land was not an option
