You don’t need a parachute to skydive. You need a parachute to skydive twice.

And ten mins later 27 miles away 10yr old Timmy was seriously injured by a falling Red Bull can.

The real hero of this stunt is the guy with the parachute that was tasked with catching up with him to keep him from dying. 👍🏼😉

Travis got all the credit but what was amazing was the team he had with him

The line between Bravery and Stupidity can be awfully thin at times. This was one of those times !

Here’s the math
1. Free Fall and Terminal Velocity

As a skydiver without a parachute falls, they will accelerate due to gravity until they reach terminal velocity, the maximum speed at which the forces of gravity and air resistance balance out.

• Gravitational Force: The downward force is calculated as:

F_g = mg

where:
• m is the mass of the person in kilograms,
• g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s²).
• Drag Force (Air Resistance): The upward force opposing gravity is given by:

F_d = \frac{1}{2} \rho v^2 C_d A

where:
• \rho is the air density (1.225 kg/m³ at sea level),
• v is the velocity of the person,
• C_d is the drag coefficient (typically around 1.0 to 1.3 for a person in a spread-eagle position),
• A is the cross-sectional area of the person perpendicular to the direction of motion (varies by body shape and orientation).
• Terminal Velocity: When F_g = F_d, the person stops accelerating and reaches terminal velocity. For a person falling in a spread-eagle position, terminal velocity is around 120 mph (193 km/h). In a more streamlined position (like diving headfirst), the terminal velocity could be higher, around 150-180 mph (240-290 km/h).

Terminal Velocity Formula:

v_t = \sqrt{\frac{2mg}{\rho A C_d}}

where the same variables apply.

2. Time to Reach Terminal Velocity

A person typically reaches terminal velocity after falling for around 12-15 seconds and covering about 1, 500 feet (~450 meters). After this, the person falls at a constant speed.

3. Distance Fallen During Free Fall

To calculate the distance fallen during free fall from a given height, we can use the equation for uniformly accelerated motion:

d = \frac{1}{2} g t^2

where:

• d is the distance fallen,
• g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s²),
• t is the time in seconds.

If a skydiver falls for 60 seconds (which would be typical for a fall from around 12, 000 feet without terminal velocity), the distance fallen would be:

d = \frac{1}{2} \times 9.81 \times (60)^2 = 17, 658 \, \text{meters} \approx 58, 000 \, \text{feet}

However, because of terminal velocity, this distance will be less after reaching constant speed.

4. Impact and Force

If no parachute is deployed, the person will eventually hit the ground. The force of impact depends on their speed and the hardness of the surface. The stopping force can be estimated using basic physics, with:

F = \frac{mv^2}{2d}

where d is the distance over which the person comes to a stop (in a soft surface like water or snow, the stopping distance would be greater, reducing the force; on a hard surface, the stopping distance is nearly zero, leading to a fatal impact).

For someone falling at terminal velocity (~120 mph or 54 m/s), the force on impact would be extreme unless they hit a very soft surface (such as deep snow or water) at an optimal angle, which could slow the person down over a longer distance and reduce the impact force.
