Only Mark Kermode would watch the first Inside Out and say to himself, "Okay, this is like David Cronenberg's Crash, " and that's why I love him

When Joy said: "Maybe this is what happens when you grow up, you feel less jOy, " bro, I really felt that.

It’s pretty genius. The new emotions taking root and replacing her personality. The quarantined bad emotions intertwining with the strings or vibrations of her good emotions which were her belief systems and now supplanting her old beliefs which joy ( perfectionistic) wanted to control. She needed to see the anxiety as the shadow of joy doing everything albeit differently than joy as the same controlling force or belief- to “ make a better Riley”. Any Buddhist would be proud to see that the true core self is more important than a recreated false self in order to “ fit in” as the supreme goal. Creating a false self is short changing the original even though it can “ appear” to make great gains in the “ outside” world.

My 11 year old pointed out that the best name for an Inside Out sequel that focuses on adolescence is ‘Outside In’ - think the marketing team might have missed a trick there…

Vinyl background behind Simon actually looks like the cover of the soundtrack of the first movie.

Definitely agree with Mark, the first film is better but 2 is a worthy sequel. I gave them 9.5 and 8.5 out of ten respectively.

This resonated with me and my fellow late-20s friend a bit too much 😅 Anxiety being in charge and the whole panic attack sequence. Ooof...That was relatable.
I enjoyed it much more than i thought i would, going in with pretty low expectations in line with othet recent Disney and Pixar sequels. I am generally unhappy that Disney and Pixar don't seem to want to invest in original films anymore. But I do think this sequel did justify itself more than many of the others have.

Great to hear a reference to Cronenberg's Crash, probably (along with Cabaret), the most 'adult' film I have seen and, I think a work of genius

I just got back from watching it, and it was SO GOOD. The way they ended it at the very end seemed abrupt, though...we all kept waiting for something else, and the credits kept rolling. 8.5/10, though, very inoffensive and creative. Best PIXAR movie since COCO, in my honest opinion.

Bless your warped mind Mark for mentioning Crash and A Matter of Life and Death as comparisons to Inside Out as other perfect films. 😂

I thought it was absolutely superb from start to finish. I was so satisfied with the ending, just wonderful. I even prefer this film to the original. It has to be said that the Inside Out series really should be considered among the company of the pantheon of Pixar classics. It belongs with Toy Story, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, etc.

I haven't seen or heard one bit of advertising for this, I've just been inundated with trailers for the bloody Fall Guy

Hi, sorry to ask a silly question, unfortunately i don't listen to the show as regularly as I'd like to at the moment - how come Mark and Simon don't record in the studio anymore, please? Sorry to ask, just curious 😅

Really well-realised, funny, sweet, empathetic, clever, intermittently beautiful. Both movies bring to life the ordinary in ways that all ages can understand, appreciate, and enjoy, and despite the added emotional complexity of adolescence, I didn't think the story of IO2 lost any of the simplicity of IO1 like Mark did.

Its main weakness is inherent in the concept: the pathological self-consciousness, inescapable in our current culture, often seeming to cancel out the per se healthy gnosis of mental fragilities and illnesses. Both films astutely and with great sympathetic clarity stress the moderating forces of each emotion, but Riley's will, her ability to choose and act away from her emotion, is not really seen, her sense of self never quite taking this place. I would love for Inside Out 3 to explore this in detail.

Very curious to see how this sequel performs and if it sparks some much needed life into the Worldwide Box Office after the first movie grossed roughly $860m worldwide back in '15!

I was never quite as keen on the first Inside Out as others seemed to be – I could see it was clearly a very good film, but I never quite 'felt' it. It seemed more concerned with the ontological and mechanical elements, with saying "look! This is how this phenomenon happens!", which was very clever and innovative but, ironically given the subject matter, for the most part not very emotional. I thought this was a step up in that regard, and more well-rounded, giving Riley an actual personality (as much as I liked the 'she's the setting' pitch, it left her feeling empty at times in the 1st film) and the added injection of humour made this a more amusing experience, a contrast with the serenity of the original but a favourable one in my view. I can see the themes playing more with older viewers than children, but there was still plenty of children to take from it, and I think it'll have great staying power, especially for parents helping their children to understand what growing up is like. This was a terrific film with everything I've come to love from Pixar, and I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a new Toy Story in terms of a franchise with a rock-solid guarantee of quality.

'Hockey pitch' to my ears must be as grating as it is to Brits when I call a football goalie a 'goal tender'.

Is there a reason why Mark/Simon haven't filmed in the studio for the last 4/5 weeks?

3:43 A pang of self-recognition for Simon there.
