I’m surprised you didn’t talk about Teen Mom on MTV. As far as exploitation, putting vulnerable teenager parents on tv seems especially egregious. Maybe worse, the children have to grow up in that dysfunctional situation made worse by having your early family life blasted on tv

Reality TV always made me feel uncomfortable. Like watching a couple have a fight in public. It's unfortunate that sentiment seems to be the minority.

I've been asking this question for a while now, with one exception - Why are people obsessed with Reality TV? I still don't understand the allure.

As someone who is autistic, Love on the Spectrum is genuinely painful and harms my community. It infantiles and fetishises us. The way music is used, and how they focus on certain aspects. It focuses on amplifying existing stereotypes. As an Aussie, I’m ashamed that this originated from my home. It could have been an opportunity to show us in a different light and educated viewers, while still being entertaining. I know so many ‘tisms who have a chaotic personality, that would be PERFECT for reality TV.

I stopped watching reality tv shows decades ago because of seeing how people were treated during and afterwards when the show was cancelled. It’s a sad that our society feeds off of watching people suffer. Not me!

Leeja! I almost spit out my coffee! I was literally just thinking yesterday "I should see if Leeja has ever covered this topic." Because Sister Wives!!!! TLC straight up exploits its cast members AND re-traumatizes/triggers its viewing audience repeatedly.

I finally realized I watched both "religious cult"-type reality shows. Why? Because I've known narcissists my whole life. I've been shoe-horned into codependency multiple times! At first, I was unaware, so I'm exposing myself to this viewing dysfunction because it's sadly familiar. Now, I have watched because I'm stunned, shocked, sad, and highly concerned for the Brown family on Sister Wives. Their adult children (who have no NDAs with TLC) have confirmed what was actually going on and what was created for a TV moment. His (Kody Brown's) abuse is not created for TV. 😡🤬

I hated reality tv before this video, now I hate it more to know the "talent" is being exploited. I watch youtube instead, especially thought out, charming, and informative channels like this one!

As someone who has been on “Reality TV”, I can say the only thing real about it is that there is no script.
There is definitely a storyline that the producers want told.
Also, they certainly cast the villain early on in their heads, and it is life changing.
I was on TLC’s “Four Weddings” back in October of 2010. It was only the second season, the first season people were lovely.
It was a bit harder core when they moved it to Texas. It seems no one wants to go to a wedding on the 4th of July.
Anyway- we were given no choice of when to be there, when to leave. We were driven by a driven and it was at least a 16 hr day. They did not pay us at all. We were not workers, we were contestants.
It felt like we were cattle.

"Reality TV" is an oxymoron in the extreme. It is merely a vehicle for people to (at least temporarily) escape their own reality.

Here in germany theres a show called "Schwiegertochter gesucht" ("Looking for a Daughter-in-Law"), and one satirical late night show infiltrated said show with their own fake candidate, to reveal some shocking things. Just fits the bill, really!
