Sunroof was made for European countries because they don't have much sunny days, so in order to get more and more sunlight in the car they made Sunroof.. That's the reason it's called Sunroof..

In India it is the most useless feature, I would rather have UV400 protection windows and tinted windows and windshields...

People in the comments saying it is feature only needed for cold weather region like Europe are just totally wrong.

This is a myth.

Sunroof were not at all meant for purpose of trapping heat from sun.

It is useless for that, and cars already had heaters. Not to mention in such climates snowfall is very common, and overnight the weight of the snow will break the glass.

It was added only for aesthetic purpose as it makes the cabin feel larger and airy and way less claustrophobic.

this is the same reason why luxury cars also have beige color interior rather than Black, as it feels bigger.

This is just a false information that it was meant for trapping heat from sunlight.

It was a luxury feature always and nothing to do with functionality of trapping heat for European countries.

edit: if anything it helps (helped) people in hot climate to let the airflow.

As they were kind of first seen in horse carts (covered horse carts) and people did have heaters but not ACs to run inside the carts. So such opening helped in Hotter climate not cooler.

The actual purpose of sunroof is to let more sunlight come inside car (not the wind). This feature was use to design for western countries where they hardly see sun.
