Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visit Paiporta, a town in the country's south-east hit hard by the recent deadly floods. Furious locals pelt the king with mud, crying "murderers!", forcing officials to cut his visit short. The scene highlights the depth of anger in the country over the response to its worst such disaster in decades, with the death toll over 200 and rising, and hopes for finding survivors dwindling five days on.

Context: Despite the fact that from the first moment, all Spaniards with an iPhone, PC or TV, were aware of the seriousness of what was happening, and of the requests for help. The authorities and administrations did not react, it took days and there was a confusion of competences between administrations and a slow bureaucracy. Meanwhile, thousands of ordinary people went to help as best they could, in despair to see the victims of the disaster without aid or supplies.
The absurd statements of the politicians only worsened the spirits.
And all this has generated a high degree of indignation against the institutions and the authorities.

Worldwide, most people have no clue how their governments work. In the US, back when Katrina happened, people complained about the federal government. When someone tried to explain that preparation and reaction to disasters was a State responsibility, he was called insensitive. Feelings have nothing to do with laws, organizations, processes. This is like a mirror repetition with the failure of the local government being used as talking point for the limitations of the central government. Spain may not be a federal government as would be defined by a political scientist, but in economic classes it is explained it has been operating like one for long time. On top of that, it is a constitutional monarchy, where the king does not govern anything, signs what he is told, goes to the international submits he is sent to. I guess people actually believe somebody in a palace in the capital controls everything like in a movie.
