Antidepressants are drugs used for the treatment of major depressive disorders as well as other conditions including anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), eating disorders, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder and some chronic pain. Most antidepressants act by increasing the synaptic availability of serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine. This pharmacology lecture covers topics such as monoamine hypothesis of depression, bipolar disorder, role of serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, monoamine receptors, mechanism of action of antidepressants; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), atypical antidepressants, and Lithium. As a layman/patient/somebody simply taking one of these drugs, I found this explanation to be extremely useful and understandable and really spelled out the differences in mechanism of action between the successive classes of antidepressant drugs. This video is quite excellent in summarising such a complex field of mood disorders and the different treatments.

I predict that atypical antidepressants will become the dominant “class” of medicine marketed. There are just so many different molecules that seem to have some positive effect on mood. What class people respond to is still a lottery; even if geneotyping becomes involved in predicting the probability of success to one drug over another.
