How do Fish Breath Underwater? #shorts
If someone drowned your head in water, nothing will be more important for you than taking your head out for breathing. But how does a fish spends its whole life inside water? Double tap the screen and let's understand the science behind fish breathing inside water.
A fish consists of two gills on both sides of its head behind its eyes, these gills remain covered by the operculum. The breathing process in fish takes place in 2 steps.
First - The opercula and the mouth of fish both combined work as a pump, which makes water move inside the mouth of the fish through gills and takes it out of the water, this pumping is called buccal pumping.
Second - When water moves through gills, because of the numerous capillaries present in the gills, they work as a filter. These filters absorb oxygen from the water and drain the water and CO2 out of the body.
The absorbed oxygens get bonded with hemoglobin and reach the entire body and completed the breathing process.
However, the fishes like whales and dolphins cannot breathe underwater, they can remain inside the water for a long time without breathing and approach the surface of the water to inhale oxygen.
