Understanding camera lenses can be difficult when you are beginning out in video because there are so many different versions with so many different numbers. This video explains camera lenses for beginners and shows some of the best camera lenses for Canon and the best camera lenses for Sony. When learning about camera lenses for video, the first number to understand is the Focal Length of the lens. This is the first number and represents the field of view of the lens. The lower the number, the wider angle of view, and the higher numbers give you a more narrow, or zoomed in, angle of view. There are two main types of digital camera lenses, and they are prime lenses and zoom lenses. Prime lenses give you focal lengh, and zoom lenses give a range of focal lengths. The next main number to understand when determining what camera lenses to buy is the maximum aperture of the lens. This "F" number tells how wide the lens can open with the lower f/number allowing more light and creating a blurrier background than higher f/numbers. There is also Lens diameter which lets you know what size filters to buy for you camera lens. Image stabilization helps smooth out shakiness in your shots and is a definite help with camera lenses for video. The final thing to consider is the type of focusing mechanism being either mechanical or electronic. Mechanical focusing is easier for setting up focus pulls because of the number scale. On electronic focus systems, the focus ring sends a signal to a focusing motor which results in inconsistent focus pulls. This video gives you a camera lens breakdown and should help you determine which camera lens to buy for starting out in video.

Good stuff as always. I’d like to add that lens maintenance and care is also critically important, as it always making sure to replace your lens back and lens cap when the Lens is not in use. Also, you’ll probably cover filters in another episode, but I always recommend getting at least a cheap UV filter for general protection, it’s saved my lenses multiple times.

I'll need to take notes but your videos will still be better if I just keep re-watching until it all sinks in lol 👍 I only have an old iPhone 7, Mavic Mini 2 and I recently got an Osmo pocket for easy carry/grab and shoot. I would like to create some cinematic stuff though and I like Good pics, I used SLR cameras with b&w 35mm film too many years ago and developed my own pics, yes too long ago lol.
I have recently got filmic pro and firstlight but they're hard on my Phone battery. As much as I like mobile stuff, I know it's got plenty of limitations. I'm concerned whether I'd use the heavy bulky stuff enough though and it ain't cheap to seldom use. 🙄
I'm still enjoying learning from your videos while I consider my next move, cheers 👍

Oh, it was actually the new smartphones a couple of years ago perked my interest again so I guess that's good

Like your videos. Good information. What would you suggest for a beginner filmmaker who just bought the lumix s5 and wants to film a short story in one room?

I have a Sony A7Riii, with 16-35mm GM 2.8 and 24-70mm GM 2.8. They are great, but a little heavy on my Ronin S gimbal. What set of primes would you recommend to buy to replace my zooms, if that is a good idea, but only if I am getting same or better IQ please, I am not looking for cheaper, I am always looking for the best IQ, usubility and portability. Note: I have the canon nifty 50mm and sony 85mm 1.8 already.

Hi first of all thanks very much for your videos! I’m new to the video shooting and I just bought my Sony a 6400 from last week. Now, I’m looking for a new lins and a gimbal that will help me to improve my video shooting skills. These days I’ve gone through many recommendations and reviews on YouTube. Then I decide to buy the Sigma 16 mm 1.8 and a gimbal from feiyutech G6 max. And what’s your opinion on my decisions for the purchase?

The Canon 16-35 f2/8 lens is my fav, former Canon user. Although planning on switching to the Sony FX3 soon which I will need to buy an lens adapter for it. Any recommendations for a smooth adapter for the Sony FX3?

Hey how’s it going? Thanks for the previous reply but I got another problem. I just spent 800 bucks for the 12-35 lumix G for the lumix S5. It doesn’t fit! So I guess I need an adapter right? I read somewhere that an adapter ruins video. Is that true? And if not, which adapter do I need. Or should I just return the lens?

So what lens did you get instead of the 55-250mm IS STM? I was thinking of getting that on sale to try out a telescopic/portrait for $120... JC ^.^

And I don't think I have my slow motion right. It's was filmed 50 fps and editing in final cut pro at 60 fps should it be at 24??

Any other tips would be great. Like how to get those super smooth b-roll shots would be great
