In this video, Jeet Kune Do Instructor Sifu Ed Stahl from Metrolina Martial Arts and I spar, his kickboxing vs my Combative Aikido. Can Aikido work against a striker? Will I be able to make aikido techniques work when the opponent is not actively letting me perform a technique on him? We test this today and see just how well my Aikido skills are vs Ed's Kickboxing. We had a lot of fun making this video, hopefully, you get some joy out of watching it.

I always thought aikido was a cool martial art, I would like to learn it 😄.
Thank you for sharing ☺️.

I think if the kickboxer was throwing full length power kicks the Aikido would not work because the Aikido relies on being close to the other person, the kickboxer is holding back a lot here obviously because he doesn`t want to injure the Aikido instructor.

As far as I’m concerned Aikido is more of a training philisophy and archive for these old jutsu-principles that might have disappeared (I’m thinking the weapon techniques, ikkyo) otherwise. In that sense I think aikido more in line with kenjutsu and iaido, the context for most of it is fighting against/for a weapon, which is not a context we need so much as we don’t carry swords around anymore (knives exist, but way it is trained in most aikido schools is far from realistic).

What I’d be kinda interested is to see aikido’s biomechanichs and principles more in relation to wrestling, because to me that make more sense than trying to catch/parry a punch for a technique. It’s also pretty clear that’s where aikido/aikijutsu comes from, since all the principles are the same as in wrestling (as far as I can tell anyway) and which also shows here, because you dive in, snatch the head down and go for a throw. It’d be interesting to study these old locks and throws from clinch or other grappling. That’s also where wrist fighting naturally appears outside of armed combat.

Trained a version of aikido called "Real Aikido" by Ljubomir Vracarevic for three years (trained karate as a kid, so i do have some martial experience, and was in some street altercations), had loads of fun, just love the fluidity of the moves. I could feel that there was something there but we never had that "randori" sparing and i'd only had to rely on "faith" that some of those techniques work. I was physically active and my body did develop but i always had my doubts, which was natural since i never used it. When i talked to some black belts i kept having the feel that they believe in their techniques so much that they projected false confidence and that can be very dangerous.
So i went to a BJJ class and...first day i had to spar, that caught me off guard a bit. I did know about elbow, wrtist, arm, knee bars, some forms of chokes and i had a goal to work to during sparing, knew my limits and when i had to tap but i got nowhere. Kept going to BJJ and Aikido for a few months and i even managed to tap out some people with a straight ankle lock which i've learned in aikido.
Two years later i'm doing BJJ (stopped doing Aikido) regularly and not once did i manage to do any of the aikido moves did try tho. Aikido did help me with understanding move/technique sequences, i'm a very good training partner and i know how to follow my partners flow during drilling techniques and i can adjust the intensity gradually.

At the end i can say that i did get something out of Aikido but comparing 3 years of Aikido with 2 of BJJ the difference is night and day. I wish i started BJJ earlier but i do not regret my Aikido time.

I do recommend Aikido as a entry level martial art, as a starting point in your martial art development or as a activity that you can do to get your body healthier and to meet nice people...but do not think that it is reliable form of self defense.

If your elbow still hurts try getting a resistance band and do banded hammer curls and banded triceps extensions. Go for high reps and getting a pump in the bicep and triceps. Your arms will be pumped full of blood and your elbow tendon will love all the blood flow. Do for like 3 sets of high reps just focusing on pumping out high reps. Elbow should feel better after. If there is any pain then don't attempt. Hope this helps.

For Kotegaeshi as an application "in a real fight", it is better to grab the middle of the forearm, instead of the wrist. From that position you can control the elbow and the balance.
The second hint (you can combine both or do only one) is: put the throwing hand not on the back of Uke's hand, but come from the little finger side, and push in direction of the thumb.
In general: use your body and your weight, not your arms. You are focusing to much on Uke's wrist. Just bring the thing you have in your hands down, lower your weight, even lean forward and imagine really to just simply place it on the floor. (I mean the one at minute 5:00, the first one was better, but main problem at minute 5:00 is, you are "manipulating his hand directly in front of _his_ center. And you were very vulnerable to his left hand. You have to get that hand into your center and from there just down).

I gotta say you did awesome and you were very comfortable against strikes. Could I make some suggestions that I think would take your aikido to another level? But before that I would suggest this equipment.

Both opponents have gi (since it will enable a lot of grips in aikido to set up techniques)
Both opponents
- gi
- new kudo mask (basically protecting eyes and face)
- bare knuckle or just padding over knuckles

You did a lot of your techniques based on countering strikes, I would recommend you do more techniques based on trapping/gripping opponent on the guard and clinching and from there you work up techniques by grabbing and pulling them into kuzushi.

I did some research on the aikido grips and these are fundamental for most of grappling techniques, the dori waza, such as mune dori, eri dori, kakae dori, hiji dori and so on. So try out making any of those grips and using push and pull into kuzushi
Or set up for your techniques.

Also explore more into the aiki otoshi it is basically a double leg takedown.

Irimi nage with push and pull delivery.

Utilize all the different types of atemi.

Try to go for the pins as well

There is a lot more to share since I been researching aikido for some years in order to functionalize for the octagon.

So lastly I would recommend using tai sabaki by keeping ma-ai and not staying within striking distance (even though you are more than capable to do so), I recommend you keep the full ma-ai and do the irimi/entering and closing the distance and smothering opponent's guard by various grips and try to break kuzushi upon entry.

I hope my recommendations are delivered clearly and that you look into some of my suggestions. I repeat you did very well but I believe you are able to be more dominant if you look into the dori waza and consider more of techniques from clinching range rather than countering from striking range.

Rock on man, awesome content

whenever you started a move he basically stands still to wait for it to happen
that's almost so rudimentary as to not even be sparring at that point, still better than nothing though
Except for the head throws, those were legit and really effective. I am going to try those out myself now

edit: also forgot to say, this was a great idea, please do more

I agree with you guys. It's not about if this martial art is "correct" or superior or not. It's about growing and learning it as you are having fun with it. Great video.

If the kickboxer fight at a real situation not like this i think it would be different

As the founder said; “aikido is irimi and atemi”

Atemi was nowhere to be found. This was just playing, but it had nothing to do with aikido.

The kickboxing guy isn't even going 50%.More like 25%.Not only that but he isn't even trying to hit the aikidoka.

Very nice but it is very difficult to catch hand but you can attack his center by kaitinage

I would like to see both participants wearing the same gear and actually sparring.
I think the kickboxer could chop away at the Aikido practitioner’s legs and do a lot of damage.

What you call Kaiten Nage at the beginning actually has its own name: Kubi Nage, aka "Head Throw".
