Through my experience using both healthcare systems, this is my interpretation in a short skit! There's a lot more to this conversation. There is good and bad on both sides, and I hope to fuel the conversation so one day it can improve on both sides!

Ambulance ride in Ontario $45. Ambulance ride in California, 3 blocks, $2700 with really good insurance. I think I’ll choose Canada

If you have an ACTUAL emergency in Canada, they see you right away. If you cut your thumb, ya, you’re waiting.

My 21 YO daughter had botched brain surgery, suffered a brain bleed/brain injury. Had emergency surgery to save her life, then was in a coma for 2 weeks...finally came out of the coma and spent a total of 4 months in hospital. I'm SO thankful for the Canadian Healthcare. It was comforting not having to worry about a hefty hospital bill during the worst time of our lives.

This is true. I spent 9 hours in the ER on Monday. But eventually walked away patched up without paying a dime.

As someone who had lived half my life in each country and who investigates and writes about health care, the most critical point is this: Both countries rank near the bottom in terms of equity and accessibility compared to Australia, Japan and similar countries in Europe.

They forgot the part where in the US you wait just as long. It's just half of it is in a private room.

Canadians pay way more over there lifetime in healthcare then Americans. You pay from cradle to grave.

It's all about the time vs money thing, but I prefer our Canadian system. I couldn't imagine being surprised with a giant bill when a health thing comes up outside of your normal control.

I'm Canadian and emergency wait times are overblown in my experience. Waiting on a specialist, yeah there's that.

This is so true when we went to the hospital because me and my sister was so sick we had to wait 4 hours to get in + another 6 hours to go to the office + 2 more hours just for a “only stay home”

Dual citizen here, born & raised in Canada. Lived in Taiwan, S Korea and now U.S.
Canada‘a public sector is collapsing and it’s horrible & is being dragged to the Supreme Court of Canada.
My mother was a nurse there her entire life and paid her taxes for over 50 years. All the screenings were horrendously far apart and she died without seeing the Oncologist even once.

There is insurance in the US, so most or all is paid for by that.

At the same time, I am an advocate for streamlining the public sector services in the US (Medicaid, CHIP, ACA, Medicare) with non-profit insurance organizations. But, leave the private sector alone.

Canada is now the last country on earth where the Govt has a complete monopoly over healthcare and makes a Non govt option illegal for its citizens. Care is rationed and historic levels of people are dying on waitlists.

Both US and Canada should emulate European countries and Australia that provide hybrids and whose public sector uses non-profit insurance orgs to function.
But again, leave the for profit, private sector alone and allow people choice.

If it weren't for the fact that Canadian healthcare has failed me over and over again I'd say Canada, but unfortunately it has. It's expensive for taxpayers, incredibly inefficient and doctors are more concerned about ushering you out the door than they are fixing the actual problem.

I've seen the struggle first hand, with my in-laws and other folks around me. I had my appendix rupture before surgery (they waited too long), my father-in-law had tubes sticking out of his body for months while in pain, and my mother-in-law nearly lost fingers because of an infection. All of these cases were a result of delayed care and/or poor care. I'm currently dealing with head injury and I can tell you... they are pretty useless.

True story, my uncle and his wife had a baby last year and paid over $4, 000 to have her. That was just for the hospital bill, not the insurance deductible. They paid $3, 000 for their deductible before receiving care. The US healthcare really needs to be revamped because it’s obviously isn’t for the people

What people get wrong about America Healthcare is it’s not more expensive it’s just that we pay for our own Hospital Bills while in Canada everyone is paying for your Hospital Bills.

Somewhat accurate
I'm American, and I had to wait in the waiting room for *26 HOURS* with my mom until she was able to be seen!

Plus when you finally get in to see the doc in Canada you have to argue with them and try to prove to them that there really is something wrong with you. They won't listen. And you'll also hear them say maybe or probably this is the issue but they won't look further into it or take the time to actually find a better answer for you.

Canadians spend most if their time on the chair at hospitals wondering when it's their turn. While Americans spend most of their time at the front desk wondering what they'll do with their lives from now on with that bill.
