Can Stalling a Car Cause Engine Damage? Gino has a buddy that stalled his car. After stalling the car the car would not start because the timing chain tensioner failed. Can stalling a car cause that kind of engine damage?

I am sure if stalling cars caused timing chain/belt failures then driving schools would be out of business for quite some time.

I got my first manual. I stall out sometimes not because I am engaging the clutch wrong from a stop, but because I'm so used to driving automatics that I forget to downshift back into first when I stop lol. I'd try to move in gear 2 or 3 without knowing.

if you're gonna drive a stick shift, you're gonna stall a car...there's no way around that.

When I stall a car I start it and go before anyone can notice lol.

I stalled the car with the hand brake on, forgot the car is in gear, by releasing the clutch

Cars rolling back on hills whilst in gear is known to cause timing chain issues. The engine is turned backwards, whilst the tensioner and slipper are designed to tension in the forward direction of engine rotation.

If I feel like I’m gonna stall when I’m staring from a stop I immediately push the clutch back in to push the revs up again

I have been driving a manual car for six months now. When I learned to drive I stalled a lot but now I drive quite well. Sometimes, I still stall a little bit. What I want to know is whether stalling causes any damage to the car ?

Timing chain/belt is under the most stress at low rpm, so at the point before stalling its at the most tension (except from starting the engine) and then it breaks. Or it broke when trying to start again But, most VAG-cars 2005 and newer has electronic "anti stall", electronics will cut off before the engine is at damaging low rpm's.

I was talking to my mechanic. He told me it's the oil passage ways. They get caked up. Change the oil at 6000k. Flush the motor

I have jumped a timing chain once before, stalling an engine on a car in park. When the engine fizzled out, it rotated backwards just enough to collapse the chain tensioner and skip the chain a tooth on the cams. This was after a timing chain job which included the tensioner. Said tensioner turned out to be a faulty design, however, so somewhat unusual circumstances.

the timing chain tensioner would not be the place that see's stress in a stall. Obviously the trans, clutch, diff, and axles do see most of the stress when that happens. In the motor it likely hurts the bottom end. even then the damage is very negligible unless you're doing it ALOT over a long period. a friend borrowing the car once in a while seems an unlikely source for any damage like a timing chain.

haha, i'm new to stick shifting and been stalling my subaru wrx sti 2021 learning. Stalls can be harsh sometimes lol. I don't know of anyone around me with manual cars, so i'm trying to learn on the sub I bought. Was wondering if stalling hurt the engine. I stall it like 3 times a day because I'm still learning, but I think i'm getting the hang of it. It is a fun experience to be shifting. :D lololol Thanks for the video!

Who cares if a driver occasionally stalls their car what matters is that they still drive a car with a manual transmission

05 GTI 1.8T, standard transmission. I had an EPC light issue and replaced the throttle body module. Didn't solve it, so then I replaced the pedal module. It went away for 6 months and came back. I replaced the pedal module again under warranty. It still does it, but only when the RPM drops below idle, mainly when I am maneuvering in reverse, sometimes when inching forward. No shop or dealership can explain why or just don't want to try and troubleshoot it. Every time it does it I have to restart the car to get out of limp mode. It is extremely annoying. I am an auto mechanic student, so could you give me a list of possibilities to go on and I can start troubleshooting it myself? Thanks.

I've stalled my car in the garage with the reverse engaged and handbrakes pulled up. It's the second time I do it for not paying attention when turning the car on. Could this lead to damage to one of the components ??

Have you done a DIY video on replacing the timing chain tensioner yet? A little hesitant to try it myself. Checked yesterday and I do not have the latest revision and it's something I need to do. Also after doing the key fob window roll up / down mod via VAG com I realized my drivers side rear window has detached itself from the clip (my mechanic said it's very common in mk5s). Have you done a video on this as well? Thank you for continuing to post quality informative videos for those of us who haven't had the experience.
