Here is another fun fact about these “harmful oils”, this will also happen with olive oil, avocado oil, fish oil, canola oil, and pretty much a majority of all plant and animal oils. The only difference is the time it takes. The styrofoam in the video is one of the least dense forms of styrene commonly found and thus reacts the fastest. So if you want to avoid these substances just stop all use or consumption of any plant or animal based substances, although that may have other side effects.

Oh and if you’re wondering why we don’t just solve the styrofoam landfill problem by pouring plant oils on all styrofoam. It’s because it doesn’t actually break down the polymers, it’s just removing their ability to hold air. So you’ll just by left with oil contaminated with a large amount of styrene. Which in a fluid state can actually be more harmful than solids as it’s much easier to accidentally leech into soils and groundwater that way.
