I explain the four main causes of abdominal bloating and gas, and give you remedies.

1. SIBO, or small intestine bacterial overgrowth. This is a situation when you have too much bacteria in the wrong location. Most of the bacteria in your gut should be in the large intestine, not the small. The bacteria aren’t meant to be in the environment of your small intestine. When you eat, you get both hydrogen and methane gas, resulting in belching and bloating. Get a hydrogen/methane breath test. Check the links below for companies that will sell you the kit. The test is inexpensive but you may need a prescription. The test will confirm whether or not you have SIBO.
2. An imbalance of microbes, with too many methanogens that produce methane gas creating belching and flatulence. It’s like a mild version of SIBO. These methanogens consume polysaccharides, which are starches and sugars, leading to excessive fermentation.
3. Low stomach acid. This can set you up for SIBO and too many methanogens. If you consume too much protein, you can still get bloating and gas without enough acid to digest the protein.
4. Decreased bile, which is made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Without enough bile, you’ll get belching, bloating, and gas because you can’t digest the fats you eat such as nuts and oils.

Here are the remedies I recommend:

The most important thing is to cut down on carbs, because they cause stress and inflammation in your gut.
Cut down fiber, including vegetable fiber. You may even want to eliminate it for about a month to let your system reset. If you have SIBO, and eliminate fiber, you’ll starve the microbes in your small intestine. Some people don’t need to eliminate all fiber; instead, eat small amounts of cooked vegetables.

Do intermittent fasting to give your digestive system a rest.

Take betaine hydrochloride, a natural compound to help increase your hydrochloric acid. You may need to take 4 to 6 tablets before each meal, and it could take months to re-establish your stomach acid, especially if you have a history of taking antacids, antibiotics, or low salt diets.

Avoid dairy since many people are intolerant of lactose or allergic to casein.

Add bile salts if you don’t have enough bile. You know you don’t have enough bile if you have pain in the right shoulder or under your right rib cage.

These are the four main causes of bloating.

This dr has changed my life. I have had horrible Gerd for 11 years. I've been to multiple specialists and they ALL want to put me on anti acids. Apple cider vinegar completely CURED my GERD. Thank you so much. If I was a multi millionaire I would mail this guy a check for a million dollars. God bless you.

After listening to this video, I tried eliminating vegetable fiber and I was amazed that it was indeed a cause of my gas and bloating. I don't have a juicer so I boiled my greens and used the juice in my green smoothie. It worked. No gas. I'm sure a juicer would be healthier than boiling vegetables, but until I get one, boiling works. I still have to test cheese and proteins separately to see if these also cause gas, but I'm on my way to knowing what foods cause it - thanks to you, , Dr. Berg! You're fantastic - a wonderful teacher!

I want to live in Dr Berg’s world where you consider $180 as “not that expensive” for a fart test 🤨😅

I know this video is three years old but will add a comment. I was diagnosed with both hydrogen and methane SIBO over one year ago with the breath test. I have seen two gastroenterologists gone through three rounds of very expensive antibiotics and have tried four different OTC supplements like Candibactin and Disbiocide with no relief. This video points to other causes that are worth exploring. Thanks.

I had horrible constipation and bloating that I thought I was going to need to go to an emergency room for, that went on for months. Liquid magnesium citrate didn't work. I started taking sodium ascorbate, 500 mg, lysine powder, 1000 mg and magnesium citrate powder, 1000mg and it all went away. My sleep improved as well. I found out that vitamin C is an antihistimine so I took these together after my last meal of the day and all is well. Very gentle. I started out with higher doses that caused diarhhea and worked down to where it just worked naturally for me at the doses I stated. I never noticed the connection between my bloating/constipation and sleep until it all got better at the same time. What a relief.

Any doctor you go, immediately with no questions or considering your other health issues they suggest more fiber. More fiber is NOT always the solution for everything.

I have GERD and alot of trapped gas in my chest area. I get so frightened when my muscles tighten and hurt cuz it happens on my left side, thinking it's a heart attack, but everytime I go to the hospital, they think I'm wasting their time. I'm watching your show and slowly but surely trying to change my diet. Thank u Dr. Berg!

Doc, you forgot to mention that sometimes bloating can have a very simple explanation: eating too fast.

You mention Betaine Hydrochloride for increasing stomach acid. In other videos, you have advocated vinegar (or vinegar and lemon juice). I've always been unclear about the relationship between Betaine Hydrochloride and vinegar: Are they "one or the other, " or can/should you take both (either together or one with some meals and the other with other meals)? You mentioned something interesting in this video, which was that the dose on the bottle of Betaine Hydrochloride (2 tablets) might be insufficient for some people, who might want to take 4, 5, or even 6 at a time. That suggests to me that taking the BH AND vinegar simultaneously might not be excessive since more might be better.

Dr. Berg, I really would love to see you do a video on the issues with Quest protein bars and cookies. I haven’t pinpointed down to whether it’s the erythritol or the corn fiber, but I developed GERD and lots of stomach issues when I used to eat these frequently. I saw online that many others had the same experience.

I finally realized that when I would eat these, I had terrible stomachaches, bloating, and gas. Then, I couldn’t digest fats or drink coffee without terrible acid reflux, which then developed into a terrible cough for months. I really felt like something was seriously wrong with me.

It took me a long time to realize those were the issue. I also started getting intense brain fog. Yes, this was all related to the Quest products. It took many months to heal and go away after doing all the remedies you recommended for GERD and better digestion of fats.

All my symptoms went away after diligent efforts to heal my gut. Then 2 years later I convinced myself it was only the bars that caused the issues, so I had a Quest cookie every now and then.

Sure enough, all the problems came back with vengeance. I know now that I will never touch them again, but I really would like to know the exact ingredients that are problematic. It made doing keto very difficult because I couldn’t eat the foods I wanted and needed without digestion issues.

I also noticed some stomach issues with the Lily’s stevia sweetened chocolate. I know it’s not the stevia, and I’m guessing it’s the erythritol. Anyways, would love to learn more from you!

All these problems are in my past. Since low carb I have no indigestion or gas pressure. Low carb has cut out the right poison.
