Star Wars: Inside the Slave 1

Here is a basic overview of Slave 1 in full 3D. Enjoy!

I'm currently using 3D Studio Max.

Slave I, also spelled Slave One, was a modified Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft used by the infamous Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett before the Clone Wars and later his unaltered cloned son Boba Fett just prior to the Fall of the Republic and during the reign of the Galactic Empire.

The ship in its original form was produced by a subsidiary company of Kuat Drive Yards, based on the planet Kuat.

Furthermore, the ship became well-known to the galaxy's fugitives, who recognized it as the galaxy's deadliest bounty hunter.

During the Galactic Civil War, the adult Boba Fett flew Slave I to meet up with the Imperial fleet.
Darth Vader later tasked Boba and a group of bounty hunters to capture Han Solo.

Here is a list of books and tools I have used to recreate these animations. (affiliate links)

I always felt this ship had a “bigger on the inside” vibe because it looks claustrophobic from the outside

At least in Legends there is an explanation that the ship had 2 gravity generators and the secondary would rotate with the plattform, while the main one would hold the gravity for the prison cell and living quarter section. This was done so that prisoners had a hard time to reach the flight deck, in case of a prison cell break. Also rotating the ship that way, since there is no drag in space, had the advantage of a very small section to hit from the sides, while having a largge weapons plattform front and aft, actually a design that was emulated somewhat by the B-Wing.

When the ship rotates the crew area and cockpit have different gravitational fields. While the cockpit is facing forward, the crew area and crew quarters are down underneath but if the pilots want to go in the crew areas (to them) it will be right side up. The way the artificial gravity works is each section is like being on a planet, no matter which way the ship is actually facing in real space.

I have to admit, the Slave is a very interesting vessel in the Star Wars Series. What are your thoughts?

Pretty sure the main cabin has artificial gravity to keep everyone and everything in place. I read in one book that the main cabin has a gravity trap which increases gravity around anyone trying to escape.

That was cool. You should either do Jabba’s Sail barge, or the Jawa Sandcrawler next.

I have a few suggestions

Razor Crest (Mandalorian)
TIE Fighter
X- Wing
Y- Wing
Ghost (Rebels)
Home One
Supremacy
Imperial Shuttle

Excellent videos. Slave I is an iconic vehicle that I was slow to warm up to. However, the new info on how the interior of the ships pivoting flight deck looks and works helps a lot and, of course, the much loved seismic charges.

I've always found the design for Slave 1 strange. The rotating feature that alters the attitude of the ship seems to offer no beneficial purpose, and only creates numerous impracticalites for life on board.

Do Spaceball 1, I’d really like to see the section with the 3 Ring Circus..

I remember back in the late 90’s getting the Star Wars Galaxy Collector magazine special Boba Fett issue that had a poster with the Slave 1 cut away and on the other side a breakdown of Fett’s personal armaments.

Your breakdown seems very inspired by that poster and the cons you listed about Slave 1 are the same issues I had with it back in the day. Pre ATOTC, the EU books made Slave 1 out to be Fett’s primary home. Be it in space or planet side he lived there, with the exception of Jabba’s palace. But the Slave 1’s orientation during flight or in hyperspace didn’t seem to lend itself to comfortable living. I always thought that a rotating cockpit and galley (like the show Mando season 2 implies) would be more practical, so Fett’s bed and prisoner cells would always be horizontal

I've always thought this ship looks like an angle/disc grinder that lost its power cord he he he.

Again, well done. The Slave 1 is another one of my favorite Star Wars ships. It is such a unique design. Thanks!

Thanks for making this @Halfscreen and it is an awesome breakdown. Personally I Love the Slave1. I had the original toy for my Boba Fett mini-doll back in 1980, and ever since then it has always been among my most favorite Star Wars ships. Mandalorian showing us Slave1 with modern CGI is just an absolute treasure. Cannot wait for Book of Boba!!

Great video! It's one of my favorite ships! Regarding the prisoners bouncing around in the ship when it rotates, I would argue that the same gravity-generators that keep an individual upright in the Falcon as they ascend/descend the gun turrets, is also in affect here. (Regardless of which orientation the ship may be in at any given moment, the "gravity" would keep you in place.) Just my thoughts.

Your real voice gives your videos a chill, relaxing atmosphere, and it goes well with the music. Keep it up 👍🏻

Design flaws:
- Rotating makes it a larger target when pursued. (same applies to the B-Wing, who has an uncessary large profile)
- some forward facing guns are not close to the centre point. That way any movement causes a higher deviation. You did not mentioned those guns at the centre-line.
- the turret guns cannot used against pursuers. A ball turret mounted at the tip of that extension would have a far better fire arc.
- there is no advantage ever seen by the rotating mode.

- You should complain that something like the old Kenner Slave-1 is still missing as a toy for the children today. Damn Disney! ;)
Nice video, love that ship.

Skipray Gunboat next please. :)

Biggest design flaw I noticed is that the pilot’s sleeping quarters don’t rotate with the ship.
Imagine getting your laundry done, just to find it became stuck to the wall and thrown to the floor 3 galaxies later! 🤣
