Most shops just use air 1/2 impacts they don’t care about spec ugga dugga tight for them. Loosen the lugs before you jack it up. Shops aren’t worth it anymore to many hit or miss mechanics nowadays.

Lug studs are a pain when the vehicles wheel and tire or suspension hasn’t been serviced in a while. Goes to show how often a vehicle goes through maintenance.

As a mechanic who works at a shop, people dont realize if something goes wrong and you were the last one to touch it, its on you. I make sure every car leaves in its best possible condition with all service recommended that way i dont have to deal with those comebacks.

Pro tip, when you forget to break the lugs loose before you lift the car. Grab a block of wood that you can wedge infront/under front of the tire (behind the tire when your breaking lugs on passenger side) it needs to be taller than the space between your tire and the ground.

I work at a shop, and I always torque lugs to proper spec. Not only can your tire come loose from overtightening, but it can actually cause rotor warping as well.

You are supposed to loosen the lug nuts a bit (just loosen) while the car is on the ground and then jack it up to perform the rest of the procedure. This is to prevent tipping a jack or jack stand. Also physics... 😅

Put the E-brake on, then take off the tires as needed. If you need to take the brakes off, disengage the E-brake. Done ✔️

I use a 3 level adjustable impact drive with nut busting torque of upto 750 ft-lbs. If I want to be extra careful, I will use a 24 inch 1/2 drive breaker bar first to loosen it. Never hurts to buy a bigger impact drive.

I work at a Chevy dealer and all wheels taken off are torqued to factory spec after being put back on

I will say a lot of people over torque with impacts yes, but also lug bolts have the tendency to rust from the back. I’ve had German cars come in that I know for a fact I torqued to spec and suddenly I gotta get out the breaker bar cause my gun’s struggling lol

Dude. Same shit. I know my 3/8 impact will pull my lug nuts off when torqued properly. Had my tires rebalanced and needed my half inch at its highest setting to pull the lug nuts off to do my brakes a week later...

Pro tip: level the breaker bar and stand on the end of the handle and start jumping using your weight to loosen up the lug nut. Works every time for me ✌🏼

Time to get a larger breaker bar, you don't want to hurt your back. For trucks and tractors there is a policy in a lot of dealerships on the correct lifting technique to correctly torque them back up.

My father was a mechanic for over 20years and he always told me to never pull but rather push the nut screws on the tires. It destroys your back over time if you always pull

I don’t understand how some shops just don’t care. At our dealership two of our guys use torque sticks and the rest, including me, keep our air/electric impacts on the lowest setting when tightening. After we lower the car we always finish with a torque wrench (even the guys with torque sticks since they only get you in the ballpark of the specified torque)
