In this Physics video lecture in Hindi we talked about scalar field and vector field. When we draw a function for a scalar quantity (e.g. temperature ) associated with a point in terms of its coordinates, the function is called a scalar field. And, if a function depicting a vector quantity (e.g. electric field intensity ) at a point in terms of its coordinates, the function is called a vector field. The study of field theory is indispensable for a student of B.Sc. , M.Sc. , B.Tech. or M.Tech.

scalar field ke har point par function has a value but doesn't have direction (ex. temperature at points in x, y, z space is a scalar field function)

whereas in vector field every point in x, y, z space has a value as well as direction of that value (ex. electric field in x, y, z space)

gradient points towards the max change of a function from an initial point and the magnitude represents the how big/small the change is

therefore, gradient of a scalar function in 3-dimensional space is a vector function in 3-D space where at each point this vector gradient function points towards the max change of the scalar 3-D function and the magnitude of change is represented by the size of arrow

hence, gradient of scalar function is defined and is a vector function

gradient of function = change of fxn in x/dx x^+ change in fxn in y/dy y^ + change in fxn in z/dz z^

vaise hi potential in 3-D space is a scalar field, somewhere it is high and somewhere it is low, and gradient of potential i.e electric field is a vector field in 3-D space

since electric field lines/vectors at every point points from higher potential to lower potential hence, a negative sign is there in gradient

i.e E=-delV

now, why is gradient of vector field is not defined, change of vectors is also possible by subtracting vectors?

note- x, y, z need not be coordinates they can be parameters on which the function scalar/vector depends.

Really amazing... Previously whenever I was use to listen the scalar field and vector field I just understood the area under the influence...
