Just completed this step last night. I was ULTRA careful about tightening the U-bolts, so I assumed sliding the rods into the bearings would sound like a well lubricated trombone (virtually silent and effortless to slide). But not so, there is definitely a “drag” and you can hear the bearings rolling quite loud. It was even a bit sandy sounding, so I put some of the prusalube in bearings and lightly coated the rods. The good news is once I popped the rods into the y-holders and secured everything the carriage moved considerably smoother and no more sandy sound. However, the bearings are still quite loud and it takes a bit more than a finger-flick to move. It stops moving almost instantaneously after I stop applying force. From all these comments it sounds like I did okay. Everything is level and carriage is secured tightly by the u-bolts. One thing to note is I had better results by making SURE the u-bolt protruded in equal amounts out of both nuts through which they are fastened.

Thank you for this! I'm preparing for my MK3S+ build next week and have been very nervous about a few key points in the process, your build videos have really put my mind at ease. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your video. It is very well done with good zoom-ins and comments. You make it look like it is very simple. Was there no need to add grease or oil to the rods and bearings?

Hey Stef! Thanks for the awesome videos!

I purchased the kit version a couple of days ago and I am really excited for it! How has yours held up? are you still happy with the finished result? I was thinking of cleaning the linear bearings in some Isopropyl alchohol and then repacking them with some Super lube synthetic grease, do you think there is much value in me doing that?

keen to hear your thoughts :D
