What is a high school diploma worth when no one ever asks to see it?

I had 3 jobs in high school and police would arrest me for not being in school. While getting lectured by the principal I asked for a pen and paper. I wrote an “A” on it and said “if you can tell me how that pays my rent on the first, I will quit my job an get good grades” he had no answer. I then got my GED in 2 hours and picked up a trade. I make more than 80% of my graduating class. School is setting most of us up for debt and failure.
I later found out they “school admins” only want us in school because they get paid per student in class.

I talked to a college graduate (graphic design) today. He was my bartender. Go figure.

*It's worth about as much as a roll of toilet paper.*

I am a 56 year old high school dropout and live a comfortable middle class life. No one's ever ask to see my high school diploma. Glad I didn't waste any more time trying to get one. The fact that never been to prison in this day and age is all you really know about me.

In 1990, I quit high-school in the 11th grade.... Today, I operate a multi-million dollar Berkshire-Hathaway company. I am happily married with 3 children, own a 40 acre ranch, 4 vehicles, and am debt free.

I think our educational system needs to be reformulated. The world has changed, everything is fast but the educational system did not evolve in my opinion, it's obsolete .

I have two kids in school, one is a freshman in college with a football scholarship and my daughter is a senior in high school. I've told both of them for years to just graduate high school but after that, it's up to them on what they want to do with their life. My daughter has no intention on going to college. She plans on working and finding a trade or skill to further her career. I believe work experience is more valuable than studying on how to do that work.

A formal education will make you a living, self education will earn you a fortune.

Simon, I love the look on your face when you said "I don't know what you heard, but I heard 92% don't!" Go back and
That's what I say, Stats can be manipulated to say anything! Most people reading that article would take away that "Colladge" is good!
I know that I should have worked for myself. I would have been happier. So with that point of view, NO. Not necessary.
As for he business world, as it is now, I would tend to agree that the paper has no value in itself. No one ever asked me for mine.
That being said, MANY "Colladge" degrees are absolutely useless. There are tons of story on YT of students stuck with $50K, $80K, $100k student debt,
UNABLE to find work in their field of study!!! Imagine, being stuck (CANNOT be dismissed in Bankruptcy court) to repay a huge loan while working at Burger King??
Edumacation as is, is a scam. NOT just Colladge. Lmao...Cheers Bud.

My daughter went to a private college and has her CPA license. She graduated with 60k of college debt. She worked for 5yrs and is now a stay at home mom of 4. She "did"
make 6 figures a year. She is absolutely sorry she went to college and accrued such debt. The debt has been crushing for her family. Honestly, work experience is better than a degree. My husband is an auto body painter and makes 6 figures. He is self taught. It is not at all unusual for people in the auto body trade to make 80-100k. His field has so far...been recession proof. A high school diploma is not worth the paper it is printed on. Work hard, be teachable and responsible...that is the golden ticket!

Very good stuff! I have always been more about work since 16 in different fields from office to general labor work.

Only once has someone asked me to see my collage or university degrees, and that was for job in another country which required a visa.

"Formal education" = Utter garbage. I would have much rather spent the years of 14-18 learning a trade skill. Hell, I could have spent that time trying to become a rock star, even if I failed, my life would be no worse, but I would be pretty wicked at guitar. Great points you brought up. In the information age, there's absolutely no point in going to college if you aren't looking to become a doctor, lawyer, dentists, etc. Total scam. Save your money kids and invest in yourself.

Tell you a fact. Low paying jobs are more available than high paying jobs. That’s why college graduates are working as grocery baggers
