Blending stumps vary considerably from one manufacturer to another and it can be a false economy to buy cheap ones as they can be hard and scratchy. I find that the way to tell if a blending stump is good to use with graphite is to feel the end and it should have a velvety feel to it. If it is smooth and hard then it will be no good. Also, I find the older a blending stump gets it becomes more saturated with graphite and is great for applying subtle shading without the need to apply tone to the paper first. Other things you can use for larger areas are makeup pads and makeup sponges. For very subtle fine shading you can also use other pencils for example if you have 4B on paper and then run a blunt H pencil over it you can create a smooth transition between the two as the H will blend out the other tone. Hope this is also of help.

Not gonna lie but I was looking for a video on blending pencil. I was struggling with my blending a lot but now I know what I've been doing wrong. Thanks a ton 😁

Your channel is so useful and informative Kirsty. I am not a beginner artist and went to a very fine art college in France after leaving eight years in the Royal British Marines and then twelve years in Norway’s Jaegerkommandoen. I was away from art for a long time while in the service but now back into it in retirement. Your information is excellent as I am delving into color pencil drawing at this time. Like I said, I am not a beginning artist but your advice is so useful and brilliant. Thank you for you excellent advice! My name is Rune Madlands.

Perfect timing! I was recently drawing tulips and I tried to practice my shading skills n it felt like I did something wrong since it didn't turn out how I wanted it (even though it wasn't far from it but it could've looked better) Now I can see where I went wrong☺
Tysm for the tips! Love the video💜💜✨

My favorite teacher ❤️ Thanks for your video. It reminds me to stop using my fingers to blend my drawings.

These are some great tips. I want to try using brushes to blend as I normally use a blending stump.
