The idea of mixing drives of different types and sizes in your RAID array is a popular one. But can you? And if you can, should you?

In software raid you can go one further, say you have 4 1tb drives, and 2 2tb drives you can make a raid array outta 6 1tb partitions, and then make a second raid array from the left over 1tb partitions on the other drives... This can mess with performance, but I mean... you CAN do it ... lol.

Good video / I do have a 2tb and a 8tb in the same nas, but they are just storage, not raid (I have backups elsewhere) and the 10tb works fine… (different speeds too).

I have a NAS, with 1TB HDD with data on it, wanted to upgrade to 2x3TB. I plugged one 3TB, RAID1 (1x1TB and x3TB), synced and then removed 1TB and plugged seconds 3TB. now I have a RAID1 (2x3TB). so yes you can RAID1 with different size drives, but when it makes sense :)

I am making music and I need a lot of storage because of the big sample libraries. Is raid 5 good when it comes to 3 HDDs with 4TB?

Thank you for good information.

My server 3 disk I'm using is failed. It is difficult to obtain a hard disk of the same capacity because the server is old.
This server is configured with hard disk RAID 1.

3 disk capacity is 146G (HP 10K SAS).

As a replacement hard disk
300G (HP 10K SAS)
Is it possible to replace ?

146G(broken) -> 300G

Hi Samit excellent video thanks very much for posting it. I have a QNAP 4 bay NAS which is set up with 4 x 3TB drives set up in Raid 5. Unfortunately it is now reaching capacity and I would like to upgrade the drives to 10TB drives but can't find a way to achieve this within the NAS and without losing any data, do you have any suggestions that could help please.

Hi Samir, I have an LSI raid controller with 4 ssd drives in raid 10. Is it possible to swap out all of the drives one by one with larger drives to increase the raid size? (It is a bootable raid)

I have an old 3tb WD green still kicking 8 years. I want to keep it going. But dont want to buy 3tb drives now.

Can I mix two 4TB disks and one 3tb and then use the remaining 2TB for a 1 TB RAID 1 ARRAY? That would be sweet.
