Press break to full stop, then neutral, then press hand break, then release foot break then go to park.. applicable especially on downhill or uphill, much safer practice than releasing foot break first before hand brake.. Foot brake should always be last to be released..

My car manual recommended to go go P without the extra steps you mentioned.

Is there a right or wrong for this sequence?

Yes and No. On level surface, it’s fine. But when parked on a hill, you might notice a rather unpleasant “clunk” when shifting out of “P”.

What is that sound?

That is the sound of your parking pawl trying to move against the transmission output shaft. And, parking pawls can break because the weight of the car is resting on it. It might not look like much, but this little broken piece can be nuisance to fix.

So how do you avoid the “clunk” sound?

Take the following steps when parked on a hill.

1. Bring the car to a full stop.
2. Keep the foot brake pressed.
3. Shift to “N”.

Now all the weight is on the foot brake.

4. Engage the parking brake.
5. Lift your foot of the foot brake.

Now all the weight is on the parking brake.

6. Press the foot brake. (to prevent reversing)
7. Shift the gear into “P”.
8. Lift your foot of the foot brake.

Now all the weight is on the parking brake while the parking pawl acts as a fail-safe if the parking brake fails. In short, it is better to let the weight of your car rest on the parking brake than the parking paw.

Correction, before release foot brake pull up the parking brake. Then change gear to park.

I think it should be
1- full stop
2- use hand break
3- put on parking
4- raise your foot on the foot break

Yes make it a habit nalang na pag mag papark na o papatayin mo na ang makina at baba kana sa sasakyan pag nasa spot kana ng pag paparkingan, ganito nakadrive ka naka foot break then neutral taas handbreak bitaw saglit sa foot break then apak uli sa foot break at ilagay sa park take note bakit ba kailangan pa uli mag apat sa foot break pagkatapos na bitawan ng saglit, una para maset mo na yung pressure ng wiegth car doon sa handbreak pangalawa reason dadaan ka pa reverse bago ka mapunta sa park kaya need mo talaga mag footbreak para hindi na gumalaw pa ang sasakyan make it a habit nalang para hindi na makalimutan pa at maging routine na magiging muscle memory na yan, mapa patag man o uphill o down hill man yan sana naka tulong

I usually use the handbrake with my foot on the brake in D, then switch to P.

N is the culprit that cause the car rolls by itself to accident. Straight to P will save your life.

Correction, you can't release foot brake in neutral, the car will roll backwards or forward.

It's been proven mechanically that moving to Neutral is not a required step as long as your foot is on the brake when you put your parking break on.

While both methods get the job done, there isn't actually any reason to be in neutral during this process as long as you are using your brake to maintain a stable position while parking, and not the transmission.

I believe the intent is to make sure that the vehicle is totally stopped before applying parking brakes and then putting the gear to park. However one does it should not matter.

From D, hold the foot brake, Switch to N
Then Handbrake before switching to P

I shifted directly to parking gear.

In 18 years nothing happen to my gear box.

I just did what you said.. I came to a stop with my foot on the foot brake and then put it into neutral and it rolled backwards into a car behind me now that car is crying because my car hit it. my car is now telling it to shut the hell up but it just keeps on beep beep beeping so I've left them arguing. 👍🏿

Pull the handbrake after switching to neutral, then release the foot brake

release the footbreak before handbrake and park is a bad idea on downhill park.😅
